Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions for a 2002 Toyota Highlander

Important Notice: This guide is for programming the remote keyless entry functions only (lock, unlock, panic). It does not program the ignition key, which requires professional assistance.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Vehicle Preparation Ensure the key is out of the ignition. Open the driver's door (keep it unlocked) and ensure all other doors are closed.
  • Step 2: Initiate Programming Sequence (within 5 seconds) Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it) and remove it. Repeat: Insert the key again (do not turn it) and quickly remove it.
  • Step 3: First Door Cycle (within 40 seconds) Close, then open the driver's door. Repeat: Close and open the driver's door again. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it) and pull it out.
  • Step 4: Second Door and Ignition Sequence (within 40 seconds) Close, then open the driver's door. Close, then open the driver's door again. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it inserted. Close the driver's door. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the vehicle), then back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Enter Programming Mode Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should automatically lock and then unlock, indicating successful entry into programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, start over from Step 1.
  • Step 6: Program Remote(s) (within 40 seconds)
  • A. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds.
  • B. Release both buttons, then press and hold the lock button alone for 2 seconds.
  • C. The door locks should lock and then unlock once, indicating successful programming. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat steps A and B for this remote.
  • D. Repeat steps A, B, and C for each additional remote.
  • Step 7: Exit Programming Mode Open the driver’s door to exit the programming mode and finalize the process.
  • Step 8: Test Each Remote Test all remote functions (lock, unlock, and panic) to ensure they are working correctly.
  • Step 9: Repeat If Necessary If any remote does not function as expected, repeat the entire programming procedure, ensuring all remotes are reprogrammed together.

Additional Considerations:

  • Program All Remotes at Once: Any remote not included in this session will be erased from the system's memory. Ignition Key Programming: Programming an ignition key involves additional steps and equipment, typically available only through professional services. Maintain Your Remotes: Replace the batteries in remotes periodically to ensure reliability and prevent programming issues.
