2002 Toyota RAV4 Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Step-by-Step Guide (Factory System)
Important Notes: This procedure programs only the remote transmitter functions (lock/unlock), not the ignition key. A maximum of four remotes can be stored in memory. All remotes must be programmed during the same session. Each step must be completed within the designated timeframe for successful programming.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Begin with the driver's door open and unlocked, and all other doors closed. Make sure the key is out of the ignition.
- Step 2: (Complete within 5 seconds) A. Insert the key into the ignition without turning it, then immediately remove it. B. Repeat: insert the key again (do not turn), then remove it.
- Step 3: (Complete within 40 seconds) A. Close the driver’s door, then reopen it. B. Repeat: close and reopen the driver’s door again. C. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it once more.
- Step 4: (Complete within 40 seconds) A. Close and then reopen the driver’s door. B. Repeat: close and reopen the driver’s door again. C. Close the door and leave it closed. D. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it there. E. Turn the key to the ON position (do not start the engine), then turn it OFF. F. Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 5: Within 3 seconds of removing the key, the door locks should automatically lock and then unlock once. This indicates that the vehicle is in programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, restart the process from Step 1. Step 6: (Complete within 40 seconds for each remote) A. On the first remote, press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 1.5 seconds. B. Immediately after releasing both buttons, press and hold the LOCK button for 2 seconds. C. Watch for the door locks to lock and unlock once, confirming successful programming. If the locks cycle twice, the attempt failed. Repeat
- Step 6 for that remote. D. Repeat steps A–C for each additional remote you wish to program (up to 4 total).
- Step 7: After programming all remotes, open the driver’s door to exit programming mode.
- Step 8: Close all doors and wait at least 10 seconds. Then test each remote by locking and unlocking the doors.
Additional Information:
- Ensure remote batteries are fresh before starting the procedure. If the vehicle fails to enter programming mode after several attempts, check for any issues with the door sensors or battery voltage. This procedure is intended for Toyota RAV4 models equipped with the factory keyless entry system. Dealer-installed systems may require a different method. For optimal results, perform programming in a quiet environment to avoid distractions during timing-sensitive steps.
