Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions for the 2003 Toyota Highlander

Important Notice: This vehicle model does not support self-programming for keyless entry remote fobs. Specialized diagnostic tools are required, and the procedure must be performed by a certified automotive professional.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Initial Setup Ensure the key is not in the ignition. Open the driver’s door, keeping all other doors closed and the driver’s door unlocked.
  • Step 2: Initiate Programming Sequence Within 5 seconds, perform the following actions: Insert the key into the ignition and remove it twice, without turning the key.
  • Step 3: Door Manipulation Within the next 40 seconds: Close and then open the driver’s door twice. Insert the key into the ignition again but do not turn it. Remove the key.
  • Step 4: Key and Door Synchronization Proceed within the next 40 seconds: Close and open the driver’s door twice more. Insert the key into the ignition, this time leaving it in. Close the driver’s door.
  • Step 5: Activate Programming Mode Still within 40 seconds: Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine) and then back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 6: Confirm Programming Mode Entry Within 3 seconds after removing the key, observe if the vehicle's door locks automatically lock and then unlock. This indicates successful entry into programming mode. If locks do not cycle, restart the procedure from Step 1.
  • Step 7: Programming the Remote Fob Within 40 seconds after confirming programming mode: Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds. Immediately after, press and hold the lock button on the remote for 2 seconds. The vehicle’s door locks should cycle once to indicate the remote is successfully programmed. If they cycle twice, the programming was unsuccessful; repeat this step.
  • Step 8: Additional Remotes If you are programming more than one remote, repeat Step 7 for each new remote within 40 seconds of the previous cycle.
  • Step 9: Finalize Programming Open the driver's door to exit the programming mode and complete the setup process.

Additional Considerations:

  • Reprogramming Requirement: Ensure all existing remote fobs are available during programming as they may need to be reprogrammed together. Verification of Professional Expertise: Ensure that the technician has experience with this specific model's smart key system to avoid programming errors.
