Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions for the 2003 Toyota MR2

Important Notice: The 2003 Toyota MR2 supports onboard programming for standard keyless entry remote fobs. Carefully follow the steps below to enter programming mode and register one or more remotes.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Start with the key completely removed from the ignition. Ensure the driver’s door is open, all other doors are closed, and the driver’s door is unlocked.
  • Step 2: Within 5 seconds, complete the following actions: Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it. Insert the key a second time (do not turn), then remove it.
  • Step 3: Within 40 seconds, perform the next sequence: Close the driver’s door, then open it. Close the driver’s door again, then open it once more. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it.
  • Step 4: Within another 40 seconds, proceed with the following steps: Close and then open the driver’s door. Close and then open the driver’s door again. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it inserted. Close the driver’s door. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then turn it back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Within 3 seconds, the door locks should automatically cycle—locking and unlocking once. This indicates successful entry into programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, restart from Step 1.
  • Step 6: Within 40 seconds, follow these steps to program each remote: Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds. Release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. If the door locks cycle once, the remote has been successfully programmed. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted—repeat Step 6.
  • Step 7: Repeat Step 6 for each additional remote you wish to program (up to four total).
  • Step 8: Open the driver’s door to exit programming mode.
