Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Guide – 2003 Toyota Sienna
Important Note: This procedure is for vehicles equipped with a factory-installed keyless entry system and a traditional metal ignition key. Timing is critical. Carefully follow each step and ensure all actions are completed within the specified time frames.
Programming Procedure
- Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Remove the key from the ignition. Confirm that the driver’s door is open, all other doors are closed, and the driver’s door is unlocked. Sit in the driver’s seat before beginning.
- Step 2: Insert and Remove the Key Insert the key into the ignition without turning it, then immediately remove it. This signals the beginning of the programming process.
- Step 3: Initial Lock/Unlock Cycle (Must Be Completed Within 40 Seconds) Using the power lock switch on the driver’s door, perform five full lock/unlock cycles, starting with lock. One cycle = Lock → Unlock Use a steady rhythm of about one cycle per second. After completing the fifth cycle, fully close and reopen the driver’s door.
- Step 4: Second Lock/Unlock Cycle and Ignition Actions (Must Be Completed Within 40 Seconds) Again, perform five full lock/unlock cycles using the driver’s door switch, starting with lock. Then: A. Insert the key into the ignition. B. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then back to OFF. C. Repeat: turn to ON, then back to OFF again. D. Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 5: Confirm Entry into Programming Mode Within 3 seconds, the door locks should automatically cycle once (lock and unlock). If the locks do not cycle, the vehicle has not entered programming mode. Return to Step 1 and try again, ensuring all steps are completed within the proper time limits.
- Step 6: Program the Remote(s) (Must Be Completed Within 40 Seconds Per Remote) For each remote you wish to program: A. Press and hold both the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for 1 second, then release. B. Immediately press and hold the lock button for 2 seconds, then release. C. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle once, confirming successful programming. If the locks cycle twice or do not cycle, the remote was not accepted—repeat Steps A and B. D. Repeat this step for any additional remotes, up to the system’s maximum capacity (usually four remotes).
- Step 7: Test Each Remote After programming, test each remote by pressing the lock and unlock buttons to ensure they function correctly. Verify remote operation within a few feet of the vehicle.
- Step 8: Complete the Process When all remotes are programmed and tested, close the driver’s door to exit programming mode. The system will store all recognized remotes and disable further programming until this process is repeated from the beginning.
Additional Tips and Considerations All Remotes Must Be Programmed Together:
- Any remote not programmed during this session will be erased and must be reprogrammed to work again. Timing is Crucial: Delays in any step may cause the vehicle to exit programming mode or reject the remote. Repeat the process from Step 1 if needed. Battery Health Matters: Always use remotes with fully charged batteries. Weak batteries may prevent successful transmission during programming. Maximum Remote Limit: The system may store up to four remotes. Adding more than the limit may cause older remotes to be removed from memory. Security Reminder: If you lose a remote, reprogramming can help disable its access by removing it from the system’s memory.
