2004 Mitsubishi Montero Sport – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2004 Montero Sport includes an onboard programming function that allows you to register up to two remote fobs. For the procedure to succeed, each step must be performed quickly and in the correct order.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Locate the diagnostic port beneath the dashboard on the driver's side of the vehicle.
  • Step 2: Insert the key into the ignition but do not turn it—leave it in the OFF position.
  • Step 3: Identify terminals 1 and 4 within the diagnostic port and ensure both have visible metal contacts.
  • Step 4: Use a jumper wire to connect terminal 1 to terminal 4. Keep this wire in place for the entire programming session. Double-check the terminal locations before proceeding.
  • Step 5: Within 10 seconds of connecting the jumper wire, quickly turn the ignition switch to the ACC position, then back to OFF. Repeat this motion two more times. All three ACC to OFF cycles should be completed in under two seconds. Confirmation: If performed correctly, the doors will lock and unlock once, indicating the vehicle has entered programming mode.
  • Step 6: Within 10 seconds, press the LOCK button on the first remote three times. The doors will cycle once to confirm the remote has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 7: If a second remote is being added, repeat Step 6 within one minute. The vehicle will again lock and unlock to confirm that the second remote was accepted.
  • Step 8: When programming is complete, disconnect the jumper wire from the diagnostic connector.
  • Step 9: Remove the key from the ignition to exit programming mode.
  • Step 10: Test both remotes to ensure they operate the lock and unlock functions correctly.
