2004 Subaru Outback Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2004 Subaru Outback includes onboard programming capabilities for keyless entry remote fobs. You can program up to four remotes in one session. Follow the steps below precisely to ensure successful registration.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat. Confirm that all doors, including the liftgate or trunk, are closed and unlocked.
  • Step 2: Open and close the driver’s door one time.
  • Step 3: Insert the key into the ignition. Turn it from the OFF position to the ON position (just until the dashboard lights come on), then back to OFF—ten times rapidly within 15 seconds.
  • Step 4: If completed successfully, the horn will sound once, confirming entry into programming mode.
  • Step 5: Open and close the driver’s door once more to proceed.
  • Step 6: Press any button on the remote fob you want to program. The horn will beep twice to confirm the remote has been successfully recognized.
  • Step 7: To add more remotes, repeat the sequence: open and close the driver’s door, then press a button on the next fob. Each successful registration will trigger two horn beeps. You may program up to four remotes.
  • Step 8: Once programming is complete, remove the key from the ignition. The horn will sound three times, indicating the system has exited programming mode.
  • Step 9: Wait approximately two minutes before testing the remotes to ensure proper system reset.
  • Step 10: Press the Lock button on a programmed remote. The doors should lock and the alarm system should arm.
  • Step 11: Press the Unlock button once to disarm the alarm and unlock the driver’s door. Press it again to unlock the remaining doors and the trunk.
