Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions for the 2004 Toyota Highlander

Important Notice: The 2004 Toyota Highlander does not support self-programming for keyless entry remote fobs. Professional equipment is required, and the programming should be conducted by a certified automotive professional.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Initial Setup Ensure the key is not in the ignition. Open the driver’s door, ensuring all other doors are closed and the driver’s door is unlocked.
  • Step 2: Initiate Programming Sequence Within 5 seconds, perform the following: Insert the key into the ignition and remove it twice without turning the key.
  • Step 3: Door Manipulation Within 40 seconds: Close and then open the driver’s door twice. Insert the key into the ignition and remove it without turning.
  • Step 4: Key and Door Synchronization Continue within 40 seconds: Close and open the driver’s door twice. Insert the key into the ignition, leaving it there. Close the driver’s door.
  • Step 5: Activate Programming Mode Within 40 seconds: Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then switch it back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 6: Confirm Programming Mode Entry Within 3 seconds of removing the key, observe if the vehicle's door locks automatically lock and then unlock. This indicates successful entry into programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, restart from Step 1.
  • Step 7: Programming the Remote Fob Within 40 seconds of confirming programming mode: Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds. Immediately after releasing the buttons, press and hold the lock button for 2 seconds. The door locks should cycle once to indicate successful programming. If they cycle twice, the programming was not successful; repeat this step.
  • Step 8: Additional Remotes If programming additional remotes, repeat Step 7 for each new remote within 40 seconds.
  • Step 9: Finalize Programming Open the driver's door to complete the programming process and exit programming mode.

Additional Considerations:

  • Multiple Key Requirement: Ensure that all existing remote fobs are present during programming as they may need simultaneous reprogramming. Verify Technician Expertise: Ensure the technician has experience with your model's smart key system to prevent programming issues. Consult Manufacturer Resources: For detailed instructions and further assistance, refer to the vehicle’s owner's manual or contact an authorized service center.
