Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions for the 2004 Toyota MR2

Important Notice: The 2004 Toyota MR2 supports onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs. Follow the steps below carefully to enter programming mode and register your remote(s) successfully.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Begin with the key out of the ignition. Make sure the driver’s door is open, all other doors are closed, and the driver’s door is unlocked.
  • Step 2: Within 5 seconds, complete the following sequence: Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it. Insert the key a second time (do not turn), then remove it.
  • Step 3: Within 40 seconds, proceed with the next steps: Close the driver’s door, then open it. Close the driver’s door again, then open it once more. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it.
  • Step 4: Within another 40 seconds, follow this sequence: Close and then open the driver’s door. Close and then open the driver’s door again. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in place. Close the driver’s door. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then return it to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Within 3 seconds, the door locks should automatically cycle (lock and unlock once), confirming successful entry into programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, repeat the procedure starting from Step 1.
  • Step 6: Within 40 seconds, program each remote as follows: Press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds. Release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. If the door locks cycle once, the remote was successfully programmed. If the locks cycle twice, the programming was unsuccessful—repeat Step 6 for that remote.
  • Step 7: Repeat Step 6 for each additional remote you wish to program (up to four total).
  • Step 8: Open the driver’s door to exit programming mode.
