Important Notice: The programming method for the 2004 Toyota Prius keyless entry remote fob depends on the color of the Toyota logo on the back of the remote: Silver Toyota Logo: This type of smart key cannot be programmed manually. Programming requires specialized diagnostic equipment and must be completed by a qualified technician. Black Toyota Logo: This remote can be programmed using the onboard procedure outlined below. Programming Procedure (Black Logo Remote Only) Preparation: Keep the driver’s door open. Ensure the remote is removed from the ignition switch slot. Do not press the brake pedal during this procedure.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Step 1: Within 5 seconds, insert and remove the remote from the ignition switch slot twice.
  • Step 2: Within 40 seconds: Close and open the driver’s door two times. Insert and remove the remote from the ignition slot again. Close and open the driver’s door two more times.
  • Step 3: Insert the remote into the ignition slot and close the driver’s door.
  • Step 4: Mode Selection (Within 40 seconds): Press the POWER button without pressing the brake pedal: Press once: Add a new remote without erasing existing ones. Press twice: Add a new remote and erase existing ones. Press three times: Check how many remotes are currently programmed. Press five times: Erase all registered remote codes.
  • Step 5: Remove the remote from the ignition slot.
  • Step 6: Within 5 seconds, the vehicle will respond: The door locks will cycle (lock/unlock) one, two, three, or five times depending on the mode selected. If checking registration, locks will cycle slowly one to four times to indicate the number of registered remotes.
  • Step 7: Within 40 seconds, program the remote: Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds. Within 3 seconds, press the LOCK button.
  • Step 8: The system will confirm the result: Locks cycle once = programming successful. Locks cycle twice = programming failed.
  • Step 9: Repeat Step 7 for any additional remotes (maximum of 4 total). Step 10: To exit programming mode, open the driver’s door.
