2005 Subaru Legacy Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2005 Subaru Legacy allows onboard programming for its keyless entry remote fobs. There are two types of remotes: a separate key and remote or a remote-head key (where the remote is built into the key). Follow the steps carefully for successful programming. If the process fails, it can be repeated as needed.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Identify your remote type: Separate Remote: Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully remove the back cover. Remote-Head Key: Use a small Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the back panel.
  • Step 2: Inside the remote, locate the 8-digit ID code. If there are two rows of characters, use the row that contains only numbers, no letters. Write the number down—you will need it later in the process. Note: If you are using a remote-head key, this process will only program the remote portion. The key blade must be cut, and the transponder chip must be programmed separately by a technician.
  • Step 3: Ensure all vehicle doors and the trunk are fully closed.
  • Step 4: Sit in the driver’s seat, close the door, and immediately continue to the next step.
  • Step 5: Insert the key and turn it from the LOCK position to the ON position (dash lights on, engine off) ten times rapidly within 15 seconds. If done correctly, the vehicle’s exterior lights will flash and a confirmation tone will sound, indicating that the system has entered programming mode. If no lights flash or tone is heard, exit the vehicle and restart the process.
  • Step 6: Open and then close the driver’s door once. The confirmation tone will continue, signaling that the vehicle is ready for remote programming.
  • Step 7: Using the 8-digit ID code, begin entering the digits using the driver’s door lock switch: Press the Lock button the number of times equal to the first digit. Press Unlock once to move to the next digit. Repeat this pattern for all eight digits. After the eighth digit, press Unlock once more to complete entry.
  • Step 8: Immediately repeat Step 7 using the same 8-digit code. After successfully entering the code a second time, the system will emit a 30-second confirmation tone.
  • Step 9: If you have additional remotes to program, repeat Steps 5 through 8 for each one individually. Only one remote can be programmed at a time.
  • Step 10: When finished, remove the key from the ignition. The programming process is now complete.
