2005 Subaru Outback Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2005 Subaru Outback features a keyless entry system that uses an 8-digit transmitter code for remote registration. This system can store up to four unique transmitter codes, allowing you to program new remotes or delete old ones. Each remote’s code can be found on the packaging or inside the remote on the circuit board. Before beginning, write down the 8-digit code located inside the remote. The programming steps must be performed quickly and precisely.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat. Make sure all doors, the rear gate, and trunk are fully closed.
  • Step 2: Open and close the driver’s door one time.
  • Step 3: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door again.
  • Step 4: Turn the key from the LOCK to the ON position (do not start the engine), then back to LOCK—ten times within 15 seconds. If completed correctly, an electronic tone will sound once, a buzzer will continue to beep, and the interior lights will begin flashing. This indicates the system has entered programming mode. If this does not occur, restart from Step 3.
  • Step 5: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door once more. A 30-second tone will begin. If no tone is heard or steps are delayed, restart the process from Step 3. Entering the 8-Digit Transmitter Code
  • Step 6: While the tone is active, begin entering the remote’s 8-digit code using the driver’s power door lock switch: For the first digit, press the LOCK button the number of times equal to that digit. (e.g., for digit 5, press LOCK five times) Then press the UNLOCK button once to move to the next digit. Repeat this process for all eight digits.
  • Step 7: After entering the eighth digit, press the UNLOCK button once more.
  • Step 8: Immediately re-enter the entire 8-digit code a second time, using the same sequence: LOCK (number of times per digit), then UNLOCK after each digit. After completing the final digit, press UNLOCK once. If both entries match, a 30-second confirmation tone will sound. If the entries do not match or if more than five seconds pass between presses, an error will occur. Restart from Step 5. If you encounter six consecutive errors, return to Step 3 and begin again. Programming Additional Remotes
  • Step 9: To program additional remotes (up to four total), repeat Steps 4–8 for each one.
  • Step 10: When all remotes have been programmed, remove the key from the ignition. The system will exit programming mode automatically. Final Check
  • Step 11: Test each remote by locking and unlocking the doors. Ensure all remotes function correctly before finishing.
