2005 Toyota RAV4 Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Step-by-Step Remote Lock/Unlock Programming Guide

Important Notes Before You Begin: This procedure is for programming the remote keyless entry (RKE) functions only — not the ignition immobilizer chip. A maximum of 4 remotes can be stored in memory. All remotes you wish to use must be programmed during the same session. Any remotes not programmed will be erased from memory. All steps must be performed within the specified time frames or the system will exit programming mode. Make sure the driver’s door is open and unlocked, and all other doors are closed.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Start with the key removed from the ignition. Ensure the driver’s door is open and unlocked, and all other doors are closed.
  • Step 2: (Complete within 5 seconds) A. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it. B. Insert the key again (do not turn), then remove it. Timing is crucial — both insertions must be done within 5 seconds total.
  • Step 3: (Complete within 40 seconds) A. Close the driver’s door, then immediately reopen it. B. Repeat the above step (close and reopen the door again). C. Insert the key into the ignition once more (do not turn), then remove it.
  • Step 4: (Complete within 40 seconds) A. Close and open the driver’s door again. B. Repeat this step: close and open the driver’s door again. C. Now close the driver’s door and leave it closed. D. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it inserted. E. Turn the key to the ON position (do not start the engine), then return it to OFF. F. Remove the key completely from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock and then unlock automatically. This indicates the system has successfully entered programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, return to Step 1 and try again.
  • Step 6: (Must be completed within 40 seconds for each remote) A. On the first remote, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 1.5 seconds. B. Immediately after releasing both buttons, press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. C. The door locks should cycle once — lock and unlock — confirming successful programming. If the door locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat steps A and B again.
  • Step 7: Repeat Step 6 for each additional remote you wish to program (up to four total).
  • Step 8: Open the driver’s door to exit programming mode and finalize the session.
  • Step 9: Test each remote to ensure the lock and unlock functions work as expected.

Additional Tips:

  • If programming fails, ensure all doors are fully closed (except the driver’s) and that the vehicle’s battery and remote batteries are in good condition. After programming, it’s recommended to test each remote near all doors to ensure full range and functionality. These steps do not allow programming of a transponder ignition key. That requires a separate process with diagnostic equipment.
