2005 Toyota Tundra Remote Keyless Entry Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This procedure is for vehicles equipped with a factory-installed keyless entry system. Timing is critical—each step must be completed within the specified time limit. If the process is not followed precisely, the system will exit programming mode, and you’ll need to start over.

Primary Programming Procedure Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the vehicle. Make sure the key is out of the ignition. Keep the driver’s door open and unlocked. Ensure all other doors are closed.
  • Step 2: Perform initial key insertions — complete within 5 seconds. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it. Repeat: insert the key again (do not turn it), then remove it.
  • Step 3: Begin door cycling — complete within 40 seconds. Close and reopen the driver’s door once. Repeat: close and reopen the driver’s door a second time. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it.
  • Step 4: Final preparation — complete within 40 seconds. Close and reopen the driver’s door. Repeat: close and reopen the driver’s door again. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it inserted. Close the driver’s door. Turn the key to the ON position (do not start the engine), then back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Confirm entry into programming mode. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock and unlock once. This confirms the system is in programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, return to Step 1 and repeat the process.
  • Step 6: Program remote(s) — complete within 40 seconds per remote. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 1.5 seconds. Release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. The door locks should cycle once, confirming the remote has been successfully programmed. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat this step.
  • Step 7: Program any additional remotes. Repeat Step 6 for each remote you wish to program. Up to four remotes can typically be stored.
  • Step 8: Exit programming mode. Open the driver’s door to finalize the programming session. Alternative Programming Procedure This method is sometimes effective when the primary procedure does not activate

programming mode.

  • Step 1: Prepare the vehicle. Ensure the key is out of the ignition. Keep the driver’s door open and unlocked, and make sure all other doors are closed.
  • Step 2: Insert and remove the key from the ignition once (do not turn it).
  • Step 3: Perform lock/unlock cycles — complete within 40 seconds. Use the power door lock switch on the driver’s door to perform five full lock/unlock cycles, starting with lock. Maintain a steady rhythm of about one cycle per second. (One cycle = lock + unlock). Close and then reopen the driver’s door.
  • Step 4: Repeat lock/unlock cycles — complete within 40 seconds. Perform five more lock/unlock cycles using the power door lock switch, starting with lock. Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start), then turn it back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Confirm programming mode activation. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should lock and unlock automatically. This indicates successful entry into programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, restart the process from Step 1.
  • Step 6: Program remote(s) — complete within 40 seconds per remote. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second. Release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button for 2 seconds. The door locks should cycle once to confirm the remote was accepted. If they do not cycle or cycle twice, repeat Step 6 for that remote.
  • Step 7: Repeat Step 6 for any additional remotes.
  • Step 8: Close the driver’s door to complete the programming session.
