Programming Guide for 2006 Smart Keyless Entry Remote Fob – CTS

Important Notice: The 2006 CTS does not support onboard programming of remote keyless entry fobs. All programming must be completed by a professional technician using manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Confirm that the replacement remote fob is compatible with the 2006 CTS and meets factory specifications.
  • Step 2: Make sure the vehicle's battery is fully charged and functioning properly, as programming requires a stable power supply.
  • Step 3: Bring all remote fobs you wish to use with the vehicle to the appointment, as prior remotes may be erased during the reprogramming process.
  • Step 4: Contact a certified automotive technician or service center with access to the appropriate programming tools and vehicle interface systems.
  • Step 5: If your vehicle is in working condition, consider driving it to the service provider instead of requesting mobile assistance to reduce service costs.
  • Step 6: Be ready to present documentation that proves ownership, such as your vehicle title, registration, or insurance paperwork.
  • Step 7: The technician will connect a professional scan tool to the vehicle’s OBD-II diagnostic port, typically located under the dashboard.
  • Step 8: Through the diagnostic interface, the technician will access the vehicle’s security and keyless entry modules to begin the programming session.
  • Step 9: Each remote must be programmed individually. If you are adding multiple fobs, all should be programmed together during the same session to ensure compatibility.
  • Step 10: After programming is complete, the technician will test each remote to confirm it performs all expected functions—such as locking, unlocking, and trunk release.
  • Step 11: If applicable, reinsert the mechanical key into each fob, and store any spares in a secure location for future use.
