2006 Subaru Legacy Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 2006 Subaru Legacy allows onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs. The process applies to both separate remotes and remote-head keys (where the remote is built into the key). Carefully follow the steps below. If it doesn’t work on the first attempt, the process can be repeated as needed.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Identify your remote type: Separate Remote: Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the back cover. Remote-Head Key: Use a small Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the back cover.
- Step 2: Inside the remote, locate the 8-digit ID number. If there are multiple rows, use the one containing only numbers (no letters). Write the number down—this will be used during programming. Note: If using a remote-head key, this procedure will only program the remote. The key blade must be cut and the transponder chip programmed by a dealer or qualified technician for the vehicle to start.
- Step 3: Ensure all doors and the trunk or liftgate are fully closed.
- Step 4: Sit in the driver’s seat, close the door, and immediately proceed to the next step.
- Step 5: Insert the key into the ignition. Turn it from the LOCK to the ON position (do not start the vehicle) ten times rapidly within 15 seconds. If successful, the exterior lights will flash and a tone will sound to confirm entry into programming mode. If there is no response, exit the vehicle and restart the process from Step 1.
- Step 6: Open and close the driver’s door once. The confirmation tone will continue, indicating the system is still in programming mode.
- Step 7: Enter the 8-digit code using the driver’s door lock switch: Press the Lock button the number of times equal to the first digit. Press Unlock once to move to the next digit. Repeat this sequence for all 8 digits. After the last digit is entered, press Unlock once more to complete.
- Step 8: Repeat Step 7 using the same 8-digit code a second time. After the final digit is entered, the vehicle will emit a tone lasting approximately 30 seconds, confirming successful programming.
- Step 9: To program additional remotes, repeat Steps 5 through 8 for each one individually.
- Step 10: Once all remotes are programmed, remove the key from the ignition. The programming process is now complete.
