2006 Subaru Outback Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2006 Subaru Outback supports onboard programming for keyless entry remotes. This process requires entering an 8-digit identification code found inside the remote. Depending on your remote type, the procedure may vary slightly: Separate Remote Fob: This procedure will fully program the remote. Remote Head Key: This procedure programs the remote functions only. The key must be physically cut and the transponder chip programmed by a professional for the vehicle to start. Before beginning, locate and write down the 8-digit numeric code printed inside the remote. Use only the row containing numbers—not letters.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Prepare the remote by opening the back cover: For a separate remote, use a flat-bladed screwdriver to pop off the back. For a remote head key, remove the screws with a small Phillips screwdriver.
  • Step 2: Write down the 8-digit identification number inside the remote. You will need this code for the programming sequence.
  • Step 3: Ensure all vehicle doors—including the trunk or rear hatch—are completely closed.
  • Step 4: Sit in the driver’s seat and close the door behind you.
  • Step 5: Insert the key into the ignition and turn it from LOCK to ON (do not start the engine), then back to LOCK—ten times within 15 seconds. If performed correctly, the hazard lights will flash and a tone will sound, confirming that the vehicle has entered programming mode. If you do not see or hear the signals, exit the vehicle and begin again from Step 4.
  • Step 6: Open and close the driver’s door once more to confirm the system is still in programming mode. The tone will continue. Entering the Remote Code
  • Step 7: Begin entering the 8-digit code using the power door lock switch on the driver’s door panel: Press the LOCK button the number of times that corresponds to the first digit of your code. After entering the digit, press the UNLOCK button once to advance to the next digit. Repeat this for all eight digits. After the final digit, press the UNLOCK button once more to complete the sequence. Example: For the code 12345678, the sequence would be: LOCK (1x), UNLOCK LOCK (2x), UNLOCK LOCK (3x), UNLOCK …and so on through all eight digits.
  • Step 8: Repeat Step 7 a second time, entering the entire 8-digit code again. The vehicle will emit a 30-second confirmation tone if both entries match. If you hear no tone or make a mistake, restart from Step 5. Any delay over 5 seconds between button presses will cause the system to exit programming mode. Finalizing or Adding More Remotes
  • Step 9: If you have additional remotes to program, repeat Steps 5 through 8 for each one individually.
  • Step 10: Once all remotes have been programmed, remove the key from the ignition. The system will exit programming mode automatically.
