2006 Toyota RAV4 Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Remote Lock/Unlock Programming Only (Transponder key programming requires separate procedures)

Important Notes Before Starting: These instructions program the remote functions (lock/unlock/panic) only. This process does not program the engine immobilizer chip in the key, if equipped. Ensure the driver's door is open and unlocked, and all other doors are closed before beginning. You must perform each step within the specified time limits or the vehicle will exit programming mode. A maximum of 4 remotes can be programmed.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Ensure the key is out of the ignition. The driver’s door should remain open and unlocked, and all other doors must be closed during this process.
  • Step 2: (Complete within 5 seconds) A. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it. B. Repeat the same step again: insert and remove the key (do not turn it). This step primes the vehicle to enter programming mode.
  • Step 3: (Complete within 40 seconds) A. Close the driver’s door, then immediately reopen it. B. Close and reopen the door again. C. Insert the key into the ignition again (do not turn), then remove it. These rapid door movements trigger the vehicle’s learning sequence.
  • Step 4: (Complete within 40 seconds) A. Close and reopen the driver’s door once again. B. Repeat: close and reopen the door a second time. C. This time, close the door and keep it closed. D. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it there. E. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then turn it back to OFF. F. Remove the key from the ignition. If done correctly, the system will prepare to accept remote inputs.
  • Step 5: Within 3 seconds, the door locks should automatically lock and unlock once. This confirms that the vehicle is in remote programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, return to Step 1 and start again.
  • Step 6: (Must be done within 40 seconds per remote) A. On the remote, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for about 1.5 seconds. B. Immediately release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. C. The door locks should lock and then unlock once, indicating successful remote registration. If the door locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat step A and B again.
  • Step 7: Repeat Step 6 for any additional remotes you wish to program (up to 4 total).
  • Step 8: To exit programming mode, simply open the driver’s door.
  • Step 9: Test all remotes to confirm they properly lock and unlock the doors.

Additional Information:

  • If you are also using a new ignition key with a transponder chip, that chip must be programmed separately using specialized diagnostic tools. If the power locks do not cycle as expected, double-check door positions, timing, and ensure the key is not turned during early steps. This process does not erase previously programmed remotes unless a fifth remote is added, which will overwrite the first. If remote signal strength is weak after programming, try replacing the battery in the remote.
