2006 Toyota Tacoma Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Guide
Important Information: This process is valid only for vehicles equipped with a factory keyless entry system. Each step must be followed exactly and completed within the designated time windows. Failure to do so will cancel the programming mode, requiring a full restart of the process.
Programming Instructions
- Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Remove the key from the ignition. Ensure the driver’s door is open and unlocked. Confirm all other doors are closed before beginning.
- Step 2: Initial Key Insertion – Complete Within 5 Seconds A. Insert the key into the ignition without turning it, then remove it. B. Insert the key into the ignition a second time without turning, then remove it again. These actions must be done smoothly and quickly within a 5-second window.
- Step 3: Door Cycle Sequence – Complete Within 40 Seconds A. Close and reopen the driver’s door once. B. Repeat: close and reopen the door again. C. Insert the key into the ignition once more (do not turn), then remove it.
- Step 4: Final Preparation Steps – Complete Within 40 Seconds A. Close and reopen the driver’s door. B. Repeat: close and reopen the door again. C. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in place. D. Close the driver’s door securely. E. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then turn it back to OFF. F. Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 5: Confirm Programming Mode Entry Within 3 seconds of removing the key: The power door locks should automatically lock and then unlock once. This indicates the vehicle has successfully entered programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, begin again from Step 1. Remote Fob Registration
- Step 6: Program Remote – Complete Within 40 Seconds A. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote at the same time for approximately 1.5 seconds. B. Release both buttons, then immediately press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. C. The door locks should cycle once (lock and unlock) within 3 seconds to confirm the remote has been accepted. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat Step 6.
- Step 7: Add Additional Remotes (if needed) Repeat Step 6 for each additional remote you want to program. Up to four remotes can generally be registered during a single session.
- Step 8: Exit Programming Mode Open the driver’s door to signal the vehicle to exit programming mode. The system will now return to its normal state.
- Final Testing Step 9: Verify Remote Functionality Step outside the vehicle and test each programmed remote. Confirm that: Lock and unlock functions respond as expected. Any additional features, such as tailgate release or panic alarm, work properly.
