2006 Toyota Tundra Remote Keyless Entry Fob Programming Guide

Important Note: This procedure applies to vehicles equipped with a factory-installed keyless entry system. The steps must be completed quickly and in the correct sequence. If any step is delayed or missed, the system will cancel programming mode, and the process must be restarted.

Primary Programming Procedure

  • Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Ensure the key is out of the ignition. Open the driver’s door and leave it unlocked. Confirm that all other doors are closed.
  • Step 2: Initial Key Insertions (Complete Within 5 Seconds) Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it. Repeat: insert the key again (do not turn it), then remove it.
  • Step 3: First Door Cycling Sequence (Complete Within 40 Seconds) Close and reopen the driver’s door once. Repeat: close and reopen the driver’s door again. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it.
  • Step 4: Second Door Cycling and Ignition (Complete Within 40 Seconds) Close and reopen the driver’s door. Repeat the door cycle again. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in. Close the driver’s door completely. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then turn it back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Confirm Entry into Programming Mode Within 3 seconds of removing the key: The power door locks should lock and then unlock once. This indicates the vehicle is in programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, repeat the process from Step 1.
  • Step 6: Program the Remote(s) (Complete Within 40 Seconds per Remote) Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously on the remote for 1.5 seconds. Release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. The door locks should cycle once, confirming successful programming. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat Step 6.
  • Step 7: Program Additional Remotes Repeat Step 6 for each additional remote you wish to program. You may program up to four remotes in a single session.
  • Step 8: Exit Programming Mode Open the driver’s door to end the programming session.

Alternative Programming Procedure This method may be used if the primary procedure does not activate programming mode.

  • Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Ensure the key is out of the ignition. Open the driver’s door and leave it unlocked. All other doors must remain closed.
  • Step 2: Insert and Remove the Key Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it.
  • Step 3: First Lock/Unlock Cycle (Complete Within 40 Seconds) Using the power door lock switch on the driver’s door, perform five lock/unlock cycles, starting with lock. (One cycle = one lock and one unlock). Maintain a steady rhythm—about one cycle per second. Close and reopen the driver’s door once.
  • Step 4: Second Lock/Unlock Cycle and Ignition (Complete Within 40 Seconds) Again, perform five lock/unlock cycles using the power lock switch. Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then turn it back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Confirm Programming Mode Activation Within 3 seconds, the door locks should automatically lock and unlock once. If the locks do not cycle, repeat the process from Step 1.
  • Step 6: Program the Remote(s) (Complete Within 40 Seconds per Remote) Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously on the remote for 1 second. Release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. The door locks should cycle once to confirm successful programming. If the locks do not cycle or cycle twice, repeat the step.
  • Step 7: Program Additional Remotes Repeat Step 6 for each new remote. Up to four remotes can be programmed during the same session.
  • Step 8: Exit Programming Mode Close the driver’s door to finalize the process.

Additional Tips & Information All Remotes Must Be Programmed Together:

  • Entering programming mode clears all previously registered remotes. Any fob not reprogrammed during the session will no longer work. Use Fresh Batteries: Weak batteries can prevent successful pairing. Always check or replace the battery before programming. Timing Is Crucial: Ensure every action is completed within the specified window to avoid automatic cancellation. Factory System Only: These procedures apply only to vehicles with factory-installed keyless entry systems. Aftermarket systems may require a different method.
