2007 Toyota RAV4 Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Remote Lock/Unlock Functions Only — Ignition Key Transponder Programming Requires Separate Equipment

Important Notice: These instructions program only the remote functions (lock, unlock, panic). If your key includes a transponder chip, separate programming is required for starting the vehicle. Ensure the driver’s door is open and unlocked, with all other doors closed. You must complete steps within the time limits or the system will exit programming mode. Up to 4 remotes can be programmed to this vehicle.

Programming Steps:

  • Step 1: Begin with the key completely removed from the ignition. Verify that the driver’s door is open and unlocked, and all other doors are shut.
  • Step 2: (Complete within 5 seconds) A. Insert the key into the ignition without turning it, then remove it. B. Repeat: insert the key again (do not turn), then remove it. These rapid key insertions prepare the system for programming.
  • Step 3: (Complete within 40 seconds) A. Close the driver’s door, then reopen it. B. Close the door again, then reopen it. C. Insert the key into the ignition again (do not turn), then remove it. This step triggers the system to get ready to enter programming mode.
  • Step 4: (Complete within 40 seconds) A. Close and reopen the driver’s door again. B. Repeat: close and reopen the door one more time. C. Finally, close the driver’s door and leave it closed. D. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in place. E. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then return it to the OFF position. F. Remove the key from the ignition. If done correctly, the system will enter programming mode.
  • Step 5: Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock and then unlock automatically. This confirms successful entry into remote programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, return to Step 1 and try again.
  • Step 6: (Complete for each remote within 40 seconds) A. On the remote, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons at the same time for approximately 1.5 seconds. B. Immediately release both buttons, then press and hold only the LOCK button for 2 full seconds. C. Wait for the door locks to lock and then unlock once. This confirms that the remote has been successfully registered. If the locks cycle twice, it means the remote was not accepted. Repeat steps A and B.
  • Step 7: Repeat Step 6 for any additional remotes. You can program up to 4 remotes in total.
  • Step 8: To exit programming mode, simply open the driver’s door.
  • Step 9: Test each remote to ensure all buttons function properly, including lock, unlock, and panic (if applicable).

Additional Tips:

  • Ensure you are standing within 5–10 feet of the vehicle while programming. Replace the remote battery if button presses are not registering during the process. If the remote was previously paired with a different vehicle, it may need to be reset before programming. Avoid turning the ignition or using the key fob too early or late during timed steps, as this can cause the process to fail.
