Programming Instructions for 2008 Mazda CX-9

Flip Key Remote • Transponder Key • Smart Key

Section 1: Programming the Remote (Lock/Unlock) Portion of the Flip Key This procedure programs the remote functions of the flip key, such as locking and unlocking the vehicle. Please follow all steps carefully.

  • Step 1: Open the driver’s door and keep it open throughout the procedure.
  • Step 2: Use the power lock switch to lock and then unlock the driver’s door.
  • Step 3: Insert the flip key into the ignition.
  • Step 4: Turn the key from the OFF to ON position, then back to OFF. Repeat this cycle three times within 10 seconds. Leave the key in the OFF position after the final cycle.
  • Step 5: Close and open the driver’s door three times. Leave the door open after the third repetition.
  • Step 6: The system should respond by locking and unlocking the doors once, indicating that it has entered remote programming mode.
  • Step 7: Press any button on the first remote twice. The vehicle will lock and unlock to confirm successful programming.
  • Step 8: Repeat Step 7 for up to two additional remotes (maximum of three).
  • Step 9: Remove the key from the ignition. The vehicle will perform a final series of approximately four lock/unlock cycles to confirm completion.

Section 2: Programming the Transponder (Ignition) Portion of the Flip Key This process registers the key’s internal chip with the vehicle’s immobilizer system. Two previously programmed keys are required.

Note: The new key must be properly cut before starting this procedure. Timing is critical—review all steps before beginning.

  • Step 1: Insert the first programmed transponder key and turn it to the ON position. Wait at least one second (until the red key symbol on the instrument cluster turns off), then remove the key.
  • Step 2: Within five seconds, insert the second programmed key. Turn it to the ON position for at least one second but no more than five seconds. Remove the key.
  • Step 3: Within ten seconds, insert the new key to be programmed. Turn it to the ON position. If programming is successful: The red key indicator will illuminate briefly and then turn off. If programming fails: The red key indicator will flash continuously. Remove the key, wait one minute, and try again.

Section 3: Programming a Smart Key (If Equipped) The smart key system in the 2008 Mazda CX-9 cannot be programmed manually. Professional diagnostic equipment is required.

Smart Key Programming Overview:

  • Confirm Key Compatibility: Ensure the new smart key is compatible with your 2008 Mazda CX-9 and is not currently programmed to another vehicle.
  • Schedule Service: Contact a qualified technician or automotive service center with the appropriate diagnostic tools for key programming.
  • Perform Key Registration: The technician will connect to the vehicle’s onboard system and program the new smart key through the control module.
  • Verify Functionality: After programming, all features—such as remote locking/unlocking, proximity entry, and push-button start—should be tested to ensure proper operation.
