2008 Mitsubishi Outlander

2008 Mitsubishi Outlander – Remote Fob and Smart Key

Programming Instructions For Models with a Standard Key or Remote Head Key (RHK) Note: This procedure only programs the immobilizer (engine start) function. The remote entry buttons on a Remote Head Key must be programmed using professional diagnostic equipment. You must have two working, already-programmed ignition keys to add a third. If you do not, a technician will need to create and pair a second key before proceeding.

Programming Steps:

  • Step 1: Have the new key blank cut to match your existing keys.
  • Step 2: Insert the first working key into the ignition. Turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine), leave it on for 5 seconds, then turn it OFF and remove the key.
  • Step 3: Insert the second working key, turn it to the ON position (do not start), and wait for the immobilizer warning light to begin flashing (within 10 seconds). Once flashing, turn the key OFF and remove it. If the light stops flashing, an error has occurred and you will need to restart the procedure. If the light continues to flash, proceed to the next step.
  • Step 4: Within 30 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine). If successful, the immobilizer light will stay on solid for about 3 seconds, confirming the key is now registered. If the light flashes three times, an error has occurred and the process must be restarted from Step 1.
  • Step 5: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key. You should now be able to start the vehicle using the newly programmed key.
  • Step 6: Repeat this entire process for any additional keys you wish to program.

For Models with a Smart Key System Smart Key programming for the 2008 Outlander cannot be performed manually. Specialized diagnostic equipment is required to program new smart keys to the vehicle.

Smart Key Programming Process:

  • Step 1: Schedule service with a technician trained in smart key systems who has access to manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools.
  • Step 2: If your vehicle can be driven, bringing it to the technician's location may be more cost-effective than requesting on-site service.
  • Step 3: The technician will connect a diagnostic interface to the vehicle and follow secure programming procedures to register the new smart key.
