2008 Subaru Legacy Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 2008 Subaru Legacy supports onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs. This process is compatible with both standard separate remotes and remote-head keys (remotes built into the key itself). The steps below may seem complex at first glance but are straightforward when followed carefully. The procedure can be repeated as many times as necessary.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Identify the type of remote you have: For a separate remote, use a flathead screwdriver to gently remove the back cover. For a remote-head key, use a small Phillips screwdriver to unscrew and remove the back panel.
- Step 2: Locate the 8-digit ID number inside the remote. If two lines are present, use the row that contains numbers only—no letters. Write this number down. Note: This procedure only programs the remote functions. For a remote-head key, the metal key blade must still be cut, and the transponder chip must be programmed by a dealer or qualified technician to start the vehicle.
- Step 3: Ensure that all vehicle doors—including the trunk or liftgate—are completely shut.
- Step 4: Sit in the driver’s seat, close the driver’s door, and immediately continue to the next step.
- Step 5: Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the key from the LOCK position to the ON position (do not start the engine) ten times rapidly within 15 seconds. If successful, the vehicle’s lights will flash and an audible tone will sound to confirm that it has entered programming mode. If you do not see the lights flash or hear a tone, exit the vehicle and begin again from Step 1.
- Step 6: Open and close the driver’s door one time. The confirmation tone should continue, indicating that the vehicle remains in programming mode.
- Step 7: Use the driver’s door lock switch to enter your 8-digit code: Press the Lock button the number of times that matches the first digit. Press Unlock once to move to the next digit. Repeat this pattern for all eight digits. After entering the last digit, press Unlock one final time.
- Step 8: Repeat Step 7 to re-enter the full 8-digit code. After successfully entering the code a second time, the vehicle will emit a tone lasting approximately 30 seconds to confirm successful programming.
- Step 9: If you have additional remotes to program, repeat Steps 5 through 8 for each remote individually.
- Step 10: Remove the key from the ignition. The programming process is now complete.
