2008 Toyota RAV4 – Remote Fob Programming Instructions (Remote Function Only)
Important Note: These instructions will program the remote functions (lock/unlock) only. If your key includes a transponder chip for starting the vehicle, that portion must be programmed separately using specialized equipment. The blade must also be cut to match your ignition.
Programming Procedure
- Step 1: Begin with the key removed from the ignition. Ensure the driver’s door is open, all other doors are closed, and the driver’s door is unlocked.
- Step 2: Within 5 seconds, perform the following ignition sequence: Insert the key into the ignition without turning it, then remove it. Repeat this insert/remove cycle a second time, again without turning the key.
- Step 3: Within the next 40 seconds, continue with these steps: Close and reopen the driver’s door. Close and reopen the driver’s door again. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it once more.
- Step 4: Still within 40 seconds, proceed as follows: Close and reopen the driver’s door. Close and reopen the driver’s door again. Close the driver’s door completely. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in place. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 5: Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (lock then unlock) to confirm successful entry into programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, repeat the entire process starting from Step 1.
- Step 6: Within 40 seconds, follow these steps to program each remote: Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote at the same time for approximately 1.5 seconds. Immediately release both buttons, then press the LOCK button alone and hold it for 2 seconds. The door locks should cycle once to indicate the remote has been successfully programmed. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted—repeat this step.
- Step 7: Repeat Step 6 for each additional remote you wish to program (up to four total remotes can be programmed).
- Step 8: To complete the process, open the driver’s door. This will exit programming mode.
Additional Information:
- Only the remote control functions are covered in this procedure. Transponder key or push-start systems require programming with diagnostic tools. If your remote is not functioning after this process, repeat from Step 1 and ensure all timing requirements are met precisely. It is recommended to test all programmed remotes for lock/unlock operation immediately after completing the procedure.
