Ignition Transponder Chip Key Programming Guide – 2009 Buick LaCrosse

Important Notice: These programming procedures apply only to vehicles manufactured in the United States. Carefully follow each step to successfully program a new or duplicate ignition transponder key.

Programming a New Key (When No Working Keys Are Available):

  • Step 1: Insert the newly cut key into the ignition cylinder and turn it to the ""ON"" position (do not start the engine). Leave the key in the ""ON"" position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
  • Step 2: Within 45 seconds, turn the key to the ""OFF"" position, then back to the ""ON"" position. Again, leave it ""ON"" for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
  • Step 3: Within 45 seconds, turn the key to the ""OFF"" position once more, then return it to the ""ON"" position for another 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
  • Step 4: Turn the key to the ""OFF"" position, then back to ""ON."" The new key is now programmed. Start the engine to verify that the key operates correctly.

Programming a Duplicate Key (When a Working Key Is Available):

  • Step 1: Insert an existing, already-programmed working key into the ignition cylinder.
  • Step 2: Turn the ignition to the ""ON"" position for approximately 5 seconds, then return it to the ""OFF"" position.
  • Step 3: Remove the existing key. Within 5 seconds, insert the newly cut key and turn it to the ""ON"" position for 5 seconds.
  • Step 4: Turn the key to the ""OFF"" position, then back to ""ON."" The duplicate key is now programmed. Start the engine to confirm that the new key functions properly.

Note: This procedure covers ignition key programming only. Programming of keyless entry remote fobs requires a separate process.
