Programming Guide for 2009 Smart Keyless Entry Remote Fob – Cadillac STS

Important Notice: This vehicle allows onboard programming with or without a recognized transmitter. The process differs based on whether you have a functioning remote. Canadian models require two recognized remotes to program a new one. U.S. models can be programmed with zero or one functioning transmitter.

Programming with a Recognized Transmitter: Use this method if at least one remote is already recognized by the vehicle.

  • Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is completely turned off.
  • Step 2: Have both the existing recognized remote and the new unprogrammed transmitter with you.
  • Step 3: Insert the vehicle key into the driver’s door lock cylinder.
  • Step 4: Turn the key to the unlock position five times within five seconds.
  • Step 5: The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display “Ready to Learn Electronic Key #2, 3, or 4.”
  • Step 6: Place the new transmitter in the transmitter pocket inside the center console storage area. The buttons should face the front of the vehicle.
  • Step 7: A chime will sound once the transmitter is successfully programmed. The DIC will confirm with “Ready to Learn Electronic Key #3 or 4” or “Maximum # Electronic Keys Learned.”
  • Step 8: Press the ignition control knob once to exit programming mode.
  • Step 9: Remove the remote from the pocket and press the UNLOCK button twice to finalize programming.
  • Step 10: To program more remotes, repeat Steps 6 through 9 for each.

Programming without a Recognized Transmitter (U.S. Models Only): Use this method if you do not have any working transmitters. This process takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

  • Step 1: Make sure the vehicle is turned off.
  • Step 2: Place the new transmitter in the transmitter pocket inside the center console, with buttons facing forward.
  • Step 3: Insert the vehicle key into the driver’s door lock cylinder.
  • Step 4: Turn the key to the unlock position five times within five seconds.
  • Step 5: The DIC will display “Press Start Control to Learn Keys.”
  • Step 6: Press the ignition control knob.
  • Step 7: The DIC will read “Learn Delay Active — Wait XX Min” and begin a countdown.
  • Step 8: After the countdown, the DIC will again prompt “Press Start Control to Learn Keys.”
  • Step 9: Press the ignition switch again.
  • Step 10: Repeat Steps 7–9 for a total of three 10-minute cycles.
  • Step 11: After the third countdown, the DIC will display “Ready to Learn Electronic Key #1.” All previously programmed remotes will be erased at this point.
  • Step 12: A chime will sound confirming successful programming.
  • Step 13: If programming more remotes, insert each additional one into the transmitter pocket until you hear a beep and the DIC advances to the next key number. Up to four remotes can be programmed.
  • Step 14: When finished, the DIC will show “Maximum # Electronic Keys Learned” and exit programming mode.
  • Step 15: Press the ignition control knob once more to complete the session.
  • Step 16: Press the UNLOCK button on each programmed remote to confirm functionality.
