Programming a Remote Head Key for 2009 Lincoln MKZ

Important: This procedure allows you to program a new remote head key using two already programmed keys. You must have two valid programmed keys in order to complete the process. The vehicle's onboard system will not allow manual programming with only one working key. Timing between steps is important—follow all instructions carefully. If the process fails, wait 10 seconds before starting over. Do not attempt to start the engine during this process. Review the full guide before beginning.

Remote Head Key Programming Steps:

  • Step 1: Confirm the ignition is off and all vehicle doors are fully closed.
  • Step 2: Insert the first programmed key into the ignition cylinder.
  • Step 3: Turn the key from OFF to ON (do not start the engine).
  • Step 4: Leave the key in the ON position for at least 3 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds.
  • Step 5: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the first key.
  • Step 6: Wait 3 to 10 seconds.
  • Step 7: Insert the second programmed key into the ignition.
  • Step 8: Turn the ignition from OFF to ON again.
  • Step 9: Leave the ignition ON for at least 3 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds.
  • Step 10: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the second key.
  • Step 11: Wait 3 to 10 seconds, then insert the new, unprogrammed key into the ignition.
  • Step 12: Turn the ignition from OFF to ON.
  • Step 13: Leave the ignition ON for at least 6 seconds. This allows the system to program the key.
  • Step 14: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the newly programmed key.
  • Step 15: Test the new key by starting the engine. Confirm that the vehicle starts and runs properly.
  • Step 16: If the key has an integrated remote, test the lock and unlock buttons to verify remote entry functions.
  • Step 17: If the programming fails, wait 10 seconds, then repeat steps 1 through 16.
