Programming Instructions for 2009 Mazda CX-9
Flip Key Remote • Transponder Key • Smart Key
Section 1: Programming the Remote (Lock/Unlock) Functions of the Flip Key This procedure allows the flip key’s remote to operate the door locks. Follow the steps carefully, as timing is essential.
- Step 1: Open the driver’s door and leave it open during the entire process.
- Step 2: Use the power lock switch on the driver’s door to lock and then unlock the door.
- Step 3: Insert the flip key into the ignition.
- Step 4: Turn the key to the ON position and back to OFF three times within 10 seconds. Leave the key in the ignition in the OFF position after the final cycle.
- Step 5: Close and open the driver’s door three times. After the third cycle, leave the door open.
- Step 6: The vehicle will respond by locking and unlocking the doors once, indicating it has entered remote programming mode.
- Step 7: Press any button on the first remote twice. The system will confirm programming by locking and unlocking the doors.
- Step 8: Repeat Step 7 for each additional remote (up to three total).
- Step 9: Remove the key from the ignition. The vehicle will lock and unlock the doors several times to signal the end of the procedure.
Section 2: Programming the Transponder (Ignition) Portion of the Flip Key This sequence registers the transponder chip in a new key with the vehicle’s immobilizer system. You must have two working keys to perform this operation.
Note: Ensure the new key is cut to turn in the ignition before beginning. Timing must be followed exactly for successful programming.
- Step 1: Insert the first working key and turn it to the ON position. Wait at least one second (until the red key warning light turns off), then remove the key.
- Step 2: Within five seconds, insert the second programmed key. Turn it to the ON position for at least one second but no more than five seconds, then remove it.
- Step 3: Within ten seconds, insert the new key and turn it to the ON position.
If successful: The red key warning light will briefly illuminate and turn off after one second.
If unsuccessful: The red light will flash repeatedly. Remove the key, wait at least one minute, and repeat the process.
Section 3: Programming a Smart Key (If Equipped) The smart key system in the 2009 Mazda CX-9 cannot be programmed using onboard procedures. Specialized diagnostic tools and professional access are required.
Smart Key Programming Process:
- Verify Compatibility: Ensure the smart key is designed for the 2009 Mazda CX-9 and is not linked to another vehicle.
- Obtain Professional Assistance: A qualified technician with access to factory-grade diagnostic equipment is required to complete the programming process.
- Connect to the Vehicle: The technician will use a diagnostic interface to access the vehicle’s key programming system and register the new smart key.
- Test All Functions: After registration, all smart key features—such as remote locking, keyless entry, and push-button start (if applicable)—should be tested to confirm proper operation.
