2009 Mercury Mountaineer

Programming Guide for 2009 Mercury Mountaineer Keyless Entry Remote Fob

Part 1: Programming Standard Keyless Entry Remote Fobs

Important Notice: The 2009 Mercury Mountaineer allows onboard programming for standard keyless entry remotes. All remote fobs must be programmed during the same session. If a remote is not programmed at the same time, it will no longer function and must be reprogrammed.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure all doors are fully closed.
  • Step 2: Gather all remote fobs you intend to program. Each one must be included during this session.
  • Step 3: Insert the key into the ignition switch but do not start the engine.
  • Step 4: Within 10 seconds, turn the ignition key from the OFF position to the RUN position eight times, ending in the RUN position on the eighth cycle. This must be done quickly and smoothly.
  • Step 5: After the eighth cycle, the door locks will lock and unlock automatically, confirming entry into programming mode.
  • Step 6: Within 20 seconds, press any button on the first remote fob. The door locks will cycle again to confirm the remote has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 7: Within 20 seconds, press any button on the second remote fob, if applicable. The locks will cycle again to confirm the second remote has also been accepted.
  • Step 8: Repeat Step 7 for any additional remotes. Each remote must be programmed within 20 seconds of the previous.
  • Step 9: When all remotes are programmed, turn the ignition key to the OFF position. The locks will cycle one final time to confirm the end of programming mode.
  • Step 10: Remove the key and test each remote to verify that the lock and unlock functions are working properly.

Part 2: Programming Remote Head Keys (Integrated Key and Remote)

Important Notice: This procedure only works if two previously programmed ignition keys are available. If you do not have two working keys, onboard programming cannot be performed and will require external tools.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Ensure you have: Two currently working, programmed ignition keys One new, unprogrammed remote head key
  • Step 2: Insert the first working key into the ignition.
  • Step 3: Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine). Leave it ON for at least 3 seconds but no more than 10 seconds.
  • Step 4: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the first key.
  • Step 5: Within 10 seconds, insert the second working key into the ignition.
  • Step 6: Turn the ignition to the ON position and leave it ON for at least 3 seconds but no more than 10 seconds.
  • Step 7: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the second key.
  • Step 8: Within 10 seconds, insert the new, unprogrammed key into the ignition.
  • Step 9: Turn the ignition to the ON position and leave it ON for at least 6 seconds. This step programs the new key into the vehicle’s system.
  • Step 10: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the newly programmed key.
  • Step 11: Test the new key to confirm that it starts the engine and that the integrated remote functions (if applicable) operate correctly.
  • Step 12: If the new key does not function, wait 10 seconds and repeat the process from Step 2.

Additional Considerations: All remotes and keys must be programmed during a single session. Any not included will be erased from memory. Follow timing precisely. If timing windows are missed, the procedure will fail and must be restarted. Ensure all remotes and keys have good batteries before beginning to prevent communication errors.
