2009 Scion xB Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Note: These instructions apply to programming the remote functions of the Remote Head Key. The metal key blade must be cut and the immobilizer chip programmed by a qualified technician.

The remote system supports four programmable modes:

Confirmation Mode – Verifies the number of remotes registered.

Add Mode – Registers a new remote without affecting existing ones.

Rewrite Mode – Erases all remotes and registers new ones.

Prohibition Mode – Clears all remotes and disables the remote lock system. Confirmation Mode – Check Number of Registered Remotes Start with the key out of the ignition, driver’s door open and unlocked.

  • Step 1: Insert the key into the ignition and remove it.
  • Step 2: Within 5 seconds, insert and remove the key again.
  • Step 3: Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice, then insert and remove the key again.
  • Step 4: Within the next 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice, insert the key, and close the driver’s door.
  • Step 5: Turn the ignition from LOCK to ON to OFF three times, waiting one second at each position.
  • Step 6: Remove the key.

The doors will lock and unlock several times. The number of lock/unlock cycles equals the number of registered remotes. If the doors cycle five times, there are no remotes registered. Add Mode – Register a New Remote Without Deleting Others Begin with the key out, driver’s door open and unlocked.

  • Step 1: Insert and remove the key once.
  • Step 2: Within 5 seconds, repeat Step 1.
  • Step 3: Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice, then insert and remove the key again.
  • Step 4: Within the next 40 seconds, close and open the door twice, insert the key, and close the driver’s door.
  • Step 5: Turn the ignition from LOCK to ON to OFF once, pausing one second in each position.
  • Step 6: Remove the key. The doors will lock and unlock once, indicating Add Mode is active.
  • Step 7: Within 40 seconds, press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote at the same time, then release.
  • Step 8: Within 3 seconds, press any button on the remote and release. If programming is successful, the doors will lock and unlock once. If programming fails, the doors will lock and unlock twice.
  • Step 9: To program another remote, repeat Steps 7–8 within 40 seconds.
  • Step 10: Insert the key or open a door to exit programming mode.

Rewrite Mode – Erase All Remotes and Program New Ones Start with the key removed, driver’s door open and unlocked.

  • Step 1: Insert and remove the key once.
  • Step 2: Within 5 seconds, repeat Step 1.
  • Step 3: Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice, then insert and remove the key again.
  • Step 4: Within 40 more seconds, close and open the door twice, insert the key, and close the driver’s door.
  • Step 5: Turn the ignition from LOCK to ON to OFF two times, pausing one second at each position.
  • Step 6: Remove the key. The doors will lock and unlock twice, confirming Rewrite Mode is active.
  • Step 7: Within 40 seconds, press LOCK and UNLOCK on the remote at the same time, then release.
  • Step 8: Within 3 seconds, press any button and release. Success: Doors lock and unlock once. Failure: Doors lock and unlock twice.
  • Step 9: Repeat Steps 7–8 for additional remotes within 40 seconds.
  • Step 10: Insert the key or open a door to complete the process.

Prohibition Mode – Clear All Remotes and Disable Remote Lock System Begin with the key removed, driver’s door open and unlocked.

  • Step 1: Insert and remove the key once.
  • Step 2: Within 5 seconds, repeat Step 1.
  • Step 3: Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice, then insert and remove the key again.
  • Step 4: Within 40 more seconds, close and open the door twice, insert the key, and close the driver’s door.
  • Step 5: Turn the ignition from LOCK to ON to OFF five times, holding each position for one second.
  • Step 6: Remove the key. The doors will lock and unlock five times, confirming that all remotes have been erased and the wireless system is deactivated.
