2009 Subaru Legacy Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 2009 Subaru Legacy features a keyless entry system with a built-in code learning function that allows you to program new remotes or erase outdated ones. The system can store up to four unique transmitter codes. Programming must be completed in a precise sequence, so it's important to read through the instructions fully before beginning.
Programming Procedure
- Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat. Make sure all doors, the trunk, or rear hatch are closed and unlocked.
- Step 2: Open and close the driver’s door once.
- Step 3: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door again.
- Step 4: Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the key from the LOCK position to the ON position (do not start the engine) ten times within 15 seconds. After the tenth turn, an electronic tone will sound once. A buzzer will continue to sound, and the interior light will flash. This confirms the vehicle has entered programming mode. If no tone is heard or the lights do not flash, exit the vehicle and restart the process from Step 3.
- Step 5: Within 45 seconds of entering programming mode, open and close the driver’s door once. You should hear a 30-second electronic tone. If you don’t perform this step within 15 seconds, the tone will not sound and programming will fail. Restart from Step 3 if necessary. Code Entry (Using the 8-Digit ID Number)
- Step 6: Before the electronic tone ends, begin entering the 8-digit code found on the label inside the remote or on its packaging: Press the Lock side of the driver’s door power lock switch the number of times corresponding to the first digit. Within five seconds, press the Unlock side once to move to the next digit. Repeat this process for all eight digits of the code. After entering the final digit, press Unlock once more.
- Step 7: Immediately repeat the entire 8-digit code entry again, following the same method. This second confirmation ensures the system stores the correct code. If successful, an electronic tone will sound again for 30 seconds. If the second code does not match the first, or if any entry step exceeds a 5-second delay, an error will occur. Begin again from Step 5. If six consecutive errors occur, restart from Step 3. Adding Additional Remotes
- Step 8: To program more remotes (up to four total), repeat Steps 4 through 7 for each additional fob.
- Step 9: Once all remotes are programmed, remove the key from the ignition to exit programming mode. Deleting Lost or Unwanted Remotes If a remote has been lost or you want to erase old codes, overwrite the memory by registering four remotes: If you have one remote, register it four times. If you have two remotes, register each one twice. If you have three remotes, register one remote twice and the others once. This will clear any old or unknown codes from the system. Security Tip: Ensure no other remotes are being used nearby during programming. If another transmitter is activated during this process, its code may be stored unintentionally, granting it access to your vehicle.
Final Step:
- Test each programmed remote to ensure it operates correctly (lock, unlock, and alarm functions). Repeat the process if needed for any remote that does not respond.
