2009 Subaru Outback Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 2009 Subaru Outback uses a programmable keyless entry system that stores up to four transmitter codes. Each new remote must be programmed using its unique 8-digit identification code, which is found either inside the remote or on the original packaging. This system also allows you to overwrite or delete existing remote codes for security purposes. Preparation Before Starting Locate and write down the 8-digit numeric code from inside the remote. Do not use any letters or mixed characters. Review all instructions ahead of time. The steps must be performed quickly and in sequence.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure all doors, including the rear gate or trunk, are fully closed.
- Step 2: Open and close the driver’s door once.
- Step 3: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door again.
- Step 4: Turn the ignition key from LOCK to ON (do not start the engine), then back to LOCK—10 times within 15 seconds. If performed correctly, you will hear a single tone, followed by a continuous buzzer and flashing interior lights. If these signals do not occur, restart from Step 3.
- Step 5: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door once more. A 30-second confirmation tone will begin, signaling that the system is ready to receive the transmitter code. If this tone does not play, restart the process from Step 3. Entering the Transmitter Code
- Step 6: Using the power door lock switch on the driver’s side: Press the LOCK button the number of times that matches the first digit of your code. Press UNLOCK once to move to the next digit. Repeat this for all eight digits. After the eighth digit, press UNLOCK once more to complete the sequence.
- Step 7: Immediately repeat the same 8-digit code a second time using the same steps. When entered correctly, a confirmation tone will sound for 30 seconds. If the code is incorrect or a delay exceeds five seconds between button presses, the system will cancel. Return to Step 4 and start again. Additional Remotes
- Step 8: To program more remotes (up to four total), repeat Steps 4–7 for each one using its individual code.
- Step 9: When programming is complete, remove the key from the ignition to exit programming mode. Testing the System Test each remote by pressing Lock and Unlock. Ensure each remote operates the door locks and security system correctly. If remotes fail to function, repeat the full process from Step 3. Removing Old or Lost Remotes If a transmitter is lost or replaced, its code remains stored in the system. To erase it: Program four remote codes to overwrite the memory. If you have only one working remote, program it four times. If you have two, program each twice. With three, program two of them once and the third twice. This process clears out any previously stored transmitter codes and secures the system. Avoid programming remotes when other vehicles with active keyless systems are nearby, as their signals could interfere or be mistakenly registered.
