2009 Subaru Tribeca Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notes: This vehicle supports onboard programming for remote functions only. If you are using a Remotehead Key, these steps will only program the buttons. The key itself still needs to be cut and the transponder programmed separately by a technician. Be sure to complete each step promptly—timing is critical. If an error occurs, you may restart the process at any time. Before You Begin: Determine Your Remote Type: Separate Remote: Flip open the back using a flat-bladed screwdriver. Remotehead Key: Remove the screws on the back cover using a small Phillips screwdriver. Locate the 8-Digit Code: Find the numeric-only 8-digit ID code printed inside the remote. If there are two rows, use the row with numbers only and no letters. Write this number down for use during the programming sequence.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Ensure all doors and the trunk/hatch are securely closed.
- Step 2: Sit in the driver’s seat and close the driver’s door behind you.
- Step 3: Insert the key into the ignition and turn it from LOCK to ON (just before engine start) and back to LOCK a total of 10 times within 15 seconds. If done correctly, the interior lights will flash and a tone will sound. This indicates the vehicle has entered programming mode. If there is no tone or light activity, exit the vehicle and begin again from Step 2.
- Step 4: Open and then close the driver’s door once more to confirm programming mode is still active. The tone will continue. Code Entry

- Step 6: Repeat the same process again to confirm the code: Re-enter all 8 digits using LOCK and UNLOCK. After the final digit is confirmed, the system will emit a 30-second confirmation tone. If this tone does not sound or you make an error, restart from Step 3. Adding Additional Remotes:
- Step 7: If you have more remotes to program, repeat Steps 3 through 6 for each remote. The system can store up to four remotes. Final Step:
- Step 8: Once all desired remotes have been programmed, remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 9: Test each remote: Press LOCK to secure the vehicle. Press UNLOCK to ensure the driver’s door responds. Press UNLOCK a second time to unlock all doors and trunk (if equipped).
