Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Guide – 2009 Toyota Sienna

Important Notice: These steps apply to vehicles with a standard ignition key and a factory-installed keyless entry system. The process must be performed exactly as outlined. Timing is essential—if any action is delayed or skipped, programming may fail.

Programming Procedure

  • Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Remove the key from the ignition. Ensure the driver’s door is open, all other doors are closed, and the driver’s door is unlocked. Remain seated in the driver’s seat with the key and remote(s) nearby.
  • Step 2: Begin Initial Key Insertions (Must Be Completed Within 5 Seconds) A. Insert the key into the ignition without turning, then remove it. B. Repeat: Insert the key a second time without turning, then remove it. These steps must be completed within 5 seconds to proceed correctly.
  • Step 3: Perform Door Actions and Insert Key (Must Be Completed Within 40 Seconds) A. Close and then open the driver’s door. B. Repeat: Close and open the driver’s door again. C. Insert the key into the ignition without turning, then remove it.
  • Step 4: Activate Programming Mode (Must Be Completed Within 40 Seconds) A. Close and then open the driver’s door again. B. Repeat: Close and open the driver’s door a second time. C. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it inserted. D. Close the driver’s door completely. E. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then turn it back to OFF. F. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Confirm Entry into Programming Mode Within 3 seconds, the door locks should lock and then unlock automatically. This confirms that the vehicle has entered programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, the process was unsuccessful. Return to Step 1 and try again, ensuring all steps are properly timed. Remote Programming Steps (Must Be Completed Within 40 Seconds Per Remote)
  • Step 6: Program Each Remote A. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds, then release. B. Immediately press and hold the lock button by itself for 2 seconds, then release. C. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should lock and then unlock once, indicating successful programming. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat steps A and B. D. Repeat steps A through C for each additional remote you wish to program (up to the system's maximum supported remotes).
  • Step 7: Finalize and Exit Programming Mode Open the driver’s door to complete the programming process and exit programming mode. All accepted remotes are now active.

Additional Notes & Recommendations Program All Remotes Together:

  • Remotes not included during this session will be erased and will no longer function until reprogrammed. System Capacity: Most systems allow up to four remotes. Programming beyond this limit may remove older remotes. Battery Check: Make sure each remote has a strong battery before programming to ensure reliable signal transmission. Timing Is Key: Each step must be done promptly. If you miss the window, restart from Step 1. Test After Programming: After completing the process, test each remote to confirm lock/unlock and panic features are working correctly.
