2009 Toyota Tundra Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide
These instructions apply to factory-installed keyless entry systems. Depending on your trim and system configuration, your Tundra may support either the standard programming method or an alternative lock/unlock cycling procedure. Timing is critical—follow each step promptly and exactly.
Standard Programming Procedure
- Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Ensure the key is out of the ignition. Open the driver’s door and leave it unlocked. Make sure all other doors are closed.
- Step 2: Begin Key Insertions (Complete Within 5 Seconds) Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it. Repeat: insert the key again (do not turn), then remove it.
- Step 3: Door Cycling Sequence (Complete Within 40 Seconds) Close and open the driver’s door once. Repeat: close and open the driver’s door again. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it.
- Step 4: Final Preparation (Complete Within 40 Seconds) Close and reopen the driver’s door twice again. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it inserted. Close the driver’s door. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start), then back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 5: Enter Programming Mode Within 3 seconds, the door locks should automatically lock and unlock once. This indicates successful entry into programming mode. If this does not happen, restart from Step 1.
- Step 6: Program the Remote(s) (Complete Within 40 Seconds per Remote) Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds. Release both buttons. Then press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. The door locks should cycle once, confirming successful programming. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat Step 6.
- Step 7: Program Additional Remotes Repeat Step 6 for each additional remote you want to program.
- Step 8: Exit Programming Mode Open the driver’s door to complete the process.
Alternative Programming Procedure Use this method if the standard procedure does not activate programming mode.
- Step 1: Vehicle Setup Ensure the key is out of the ignition. The driver’s door should be open and unlocked. All other doors must remain closed.
- Step 2: Insert and Remove Key Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it.
- Step 3: First Lock/Unlock Cycle (Complete Within 40 Seconds) Using the power lock switch on the driver’s door, perform five lock/unlock cycles, starting with lock. One cycle = lock + unlock. Use a steady pace—about one cycle per second. Close and reopen the driver’s door.
- Step 4: Second Lock/Unlock Cycle and Ignition Again, perform five lock/unlock cycles using the power lock switch. Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start), then turn it back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 5: Enter Programming Mode Within 3 seconds, the door locks should automatically lock and unlock once. If the locks do not cycle, repeat the process from Step 1.
- Step 6: Program the Remote(s) Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 1 second. Release both buttons. Press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. The door locks should cycle once, confirming successful programming. If the locks do not cycle or cycle twice, repeat this step.
- Step 7: Program Additional Remotes Repeat Step 6 for each remote you wish to add.
- Step 8: Finalize Programming Close the driver’s door to complete the programming session.
