2010 Subaru Legacy Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2010 Subaru Legacy includes a keyless entry system with a built-in code learning feature. This allows the system to register new remote fobs or erase outdated ones. Up to four unique transmitter codes can be stored at a time. The following steps explain new remote fob using the system's onboard capabilities. Before you begin, locate the 8-digit identification number found either on the bag the remote came in or printed on a label inside the remote. This number is essential for programming and must be entered manually during the procedure.

Programming a New Remote Fob

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and make sure all doors, including the trunk or rear hatch, are fully closed.
  • Step 2: Open and close the driver’s door once.
  • Step 3: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door again.
  • Step 4: Insert the key into the ignition and turn it from the LOCK to the ON position (do not start the engine) ten times within 15 seconds. After the tenth turn, you should hear a single electronic tone followed by a continuous buzzer, and the interior light will flash. This indicates that the vehicle is in programming mode. If this does not occur, restart from Step 3.
  • Step 5: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door once more. If performed correctly, a 30-second tone will begin. This tone indicates the system is ready to accept the remote code. If no tone sounds, restart from Step 3. Entering the Remote Code
  • Step 6: Before the 30-second tone ends, begin entering the 8-digit code using the driver’s power door lock switch. For each digit, press the LOCK side of the switch the number of times equal to that digit. (e.g., for a digit of 5, press the Lock button 5 times). After completing a digit, press UNLOCK once to move to the next. Continue this sequence for all eight digits. After the final digit, press UNLOCK once more to complete the entry.
  • Step 7: Immediately repeat the entire code sequence a second time using the same method. If the second entry matches the first, a 30-second tone will confirm successful programming. If there is a mismatch or delay of more than 5 seconds between button presses, an error will occur. Restart from Step 5. If you receive six errors in a row, begin again from Step 3. Adding Additional Remotes
  • Step 8: To program additional remotes (up to four), repeat Steps 4 through 7 for each individual fob.
  • Step 9: Once all remotes are successfully programmed, remove the key from the ignition. The system will exit programming mode.
  • Step 10: Test each remote to confirm all functions work correctly (lock, unlock, panic, etc.). Deleting Old or Lost Remote Codes If a remote has been lost or replaced, it is important to remove its stored code from the system for security purposes. To erase old transmitter codes: If you have one working remote, program it four times. If you have two remotes, program each one twice. If you have three, program two of them once and the third one twice. This will overwrite any stored codes and leave only the current remotes in memory.

Important Tip:

  • Ensure no other remotes are used nearby during programming. If another transmitter is activated while your vehicle is in programming mode, its signal could be stored in your system unintentionally, allowing unauthorized access.
