2010 Toyota RAV4 – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
For Standard Remote (Key/Remote Combo – Remote Portion Only)
Important: These steps only program the remote functions (lock/unlock) on a standard key with a built-in remote. If your key includes a transponder chip, that portion must be programmed separately using specialized diagnostic equipment. These steps do not program push-button start Smart Keys.
Programming Procedure
- Step 1: Begin with the key removed from the ignition. Ensure the driver’s door is open, all other doors are closed, and the driver’s door is unlocked.
- Step 2 (within 5 seconds): Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it. Repeat the insert/remove step one more time (for a total of two insertions).
- Step 3 (within 40 seconds): Close and reopen the driver’s door. Close and reopen the driver’s door again. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it.
- Step 4 (within 40 seconds): Close and reopen the driver’s door. Close and reopen the driver’s door again. Close the driver’s door completely. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it there. Turn the key to the ON position (do not start the engine), then turn it back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 5: Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock and then unlock automatically, confirming the vehicle is now in programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, return to Step 1 and repeat the entire sequence with careful timing.
- Step 6 (within 40 seconds): A. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for approximately 1.5 seconds. B. Release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button for 2 seconds. C. The door locks should lock and unlock once to indicate successful programming. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat steps A and B. D. Repeat steps A–C for each additional remote to be programmed (up to four remotes total).
- Step 7: Open the driver’s door to exit programming mode.
Additional Notes:
- Make sure the remote batteries are in good condition before attempting programming. All remotes must be programmed during the same session. Previously programmed remotes will stop working if not reprogrammed now. Timing is critical—if steps are delayed beyond the specified seconds, the process will fail. These steps do not program the immobilizer chip or Smart Key System.
