2011 Mercury Mariner

Programming Guide for 2011 Integrated Keyless Entry Remote Fob (Keyhead Transmitter)

Important Notice: To program an additional key for this vehicle, you must have two working, previously programmed ignition keys. The new key must be unprogrammed, compatible, and contain an integrated keyless entry remote (keyhead transmitter). This process will not work if you only have one working key. Each step must be completed within specific timing requirements to be successful.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Before starting, make sure you have all three keys in the vehicle with you: Two previously programmed ignition keys One new, unprogrammed key with an integrated remote
  • Step 2: Sit in the driver’s seat and close all vehicle doors to prevent interruptions.
  • Step 3: Insert the first programmed key into the ignition switch.
  • Step 4: Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine). Leave the key in the ON position for at least 3 seconds but no more than 10 seconds.
  • Step 5: Turn the ignition to the OFF position and remove the key.
  • Step 6: Wait at least 3 seconds but no more than 10 seconds before proceeding to the next step.
  • Step 7: Insert the second programmed key into the ignition switch.
  • Step 8: Turn the ignition to the ON position. Keep the key in the ON position for at least 3 seconds but no more than 10 seconds.
  • Step 9: Turn the ignition to the OFF position and remove the key.
  • Step 10: Wait at least 3 seconds but no more than 10 seconds before inserting the new key.
  • Step 11: Insert the new unprogrammed key into the ignition switch.
  • Step 12: Turn the ignition to the ON position and leave it on for at least 6 seconds. This allows the vehicle to recognize and program the new key.
  • Step 13: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key.
  • Step 14: Wait a few seconds, then insert the newly programmed key into the ignition.
  • Step 15: Attempt to start the engine. If the engine starts, the key has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 16: Press the lock or unlock button on the key to confirm the integrated remote fob is functioning properly.
  • Step 17: If the key does not start the vehicle or the remote does not respond, wait 10 seconds and repeat the entire process starting from Step 3.

Additional Considerations: Both previously programmed keys must be valid and recognized by the system in order to activate programming mode. Timing is critical. Exceeding any of the time limits between steps will result in a failed programming attempt. Do not attempt to start the engine during the procedure. Use only the ON position until testing in Step 15. Check the battery in the new key if remote features do not respond after successful engine start.
