2011 Subaru Legacy Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2011 Subaru Legacy features a keyless entry system capable of learning up to four unique remote fob codes. New remotes can be programmed, and old or lost codes can be overwritten. Each remote contains an 8-digit identification number, which must be manually entered during the programming process. This number can be found on the packaging or printed inside the remote on the circuit board. Before starting, review all steps carefully, as the process must be completed within specific time limits.

Programming a New Remote Fob

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure all doors—including the trunk or rear hatch—are completely closed.
  • Step 2: Open and close the driver’s door once.
  • Step 3: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door again.
  • Step 4: Insert the key into the ignition and turn it from the LOCK position to the ON position (do not start the engine) 10 times within 15 seconds. After the tenth cycle, you should hear an electronic tone, followed by a continuous buzzer. The interior light will also begin flashing. These signals confirm the vehicle is in programming mode. If none of these signals occur, begin again from Step 3.
  • Step 5: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door one more time. A 30-second tone should begin. If no tone is heard, or steps are delayed, restart from Step 3. Entering the 8-Digit Remote Code
  • Step 6: Before the tone ends, begin entering the 8-digit code using the driver’s side power door lock switch. For each digit, press the LOCK button the number of times that corresponds to that digit. Example: If the digit is 4, press LOCK four times. After completing each digit, press the UNLOCK button once to move to the next digit. Repeat this process for all eight digits. After the final digit, press UNLOCK once more.
  • Step 7: Immediately repeat the entire 8-digit sequence exactly as before. If both code entries match, the vehicle will emit a confirmation tone for 30 seconds. If the codes do not match, or if there is a delay of more than five seconds between button presses, an error will occur. Begin again from Step 5. If six errors occur in a row, restart the process from Step 3. Programming Additional Remotes
  • Step 8: To program up to four remotes, repeat Steps 4 through 7 for each one individually.
  • Step 9: Once all desired remotes are programmed, remove the key from the ignition. The system will exit programming mode automatically.
  • Step 10: Test each remote to ensure all functions operate as expected. Deleting Old or Lost Remote Codes The system retains all previously programmed remote codes. If a transmitter has been lost, its code will remain in memory unless overwritten. For security, it is recommended to delete any unused codes. To remove old codes, overwrite the system with current remotes: If you have one working remote, program it four times. If you have two remotes, program each twice. If you have three remotes, program one remote twice and the others once.

Important Tip:

  • Ensure no other remotes are being operated within range of your vehicle during programming. If another remote is used nearby, its signal may be unintentionally registered in your system, granting unauthorized access.
