2011 Toyota RAV4 – Remote Fob Programming Instructions For Remote Keys
Important Note: These steps will program the remote functions only (lock/unlock). If your key has a transponder chip for engine start, that portion must be programmed using specialized equipment. These instructions do not apply to push-button start Smart Key systems.
Programming Procedure
- Step 1: Begin with the key removed from the ignition. The driver’s door must be open, all other doors closed, and the driver’s door unlocked.
- Step 2 (within 5 seconds): Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it. Repeat this insert/remove step one more time, for a total of two insertions.
- Step 3 (within 40 seconds): Close, then reopen the driver’s door. Close, then reopen the driver’s door again. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it.
- Step 4 (within 40 seconds): Close and reopen the driver’s door. Repeat: close and reopen the door again. Close the driver’s door completely. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it inserted. Turn the key to the ON position (do not start the engine), then return it to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 5: Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (lock then unlock). This confirms that the vehicle has entered remote programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, restart the entire process from Step 1, ensuring precise timing.
- Step 6 (within 40 seconds): A. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for approximately 1.5 seconds. B. Release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button by itself for 2 seconds. C. The door locks should lock then unlock once, confirming the remote was successfully registered. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat steps A and B. D. Repeat steps A–C for each additional remote (up to 4 total remotes may be programmed).
- Step 7: Open the driver’s door to exit programming mode.
Additional Tips:
- This process does not program the immobilizer chip. The engine will not start with an unprogrammed chip even if the remote works. Remote battery should be strong to ensure signal is received during programming. All remotes must be programmed during the same session. Any remotes not programmed at this time will no longer function. Keep a stopwatch or timer handy—timing is critical. For Models with Smart Key System (Push-Button Start) If your 2011 Toyota RAV4 is equipped with a Smart Key System (push-button start), manual programming is not supported. Smart remotes must be programmed using a professional diagnostic tool connected to the vehicle.
