2011 Toyota Tacoma Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Guide
Important Note: This procedure applies only to vehicles equipped with a factory-installed keyless entry system. To successfully program remote fobs, all steps must be completed precisely and within the required time limits. If any action is delayed or done incorrectly, the process must be restarted.
Programming Procedure
- Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Make sure the key is removed from the ignition. Open the driver’s door, leave it unlocked, and ensure that all other doors are closed.
- Step 2: Initial Key Insertions – Complete Within 5 Seconds A. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it. B. Repeat: insert the key again (do not turn), then remove it. These actions must be completed quickly and smoothly within five seconds.
- Step 3: Begin Door Cycle – Complete Within 40 Seconds A. Close and reopen the driver’s door once. B. Repeat: close and reopen the door a second time. C. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it again.
- Step 4: Final Setup – Complete Within 40 Seconds A. Close and reopen the driver’s door. B. Repeat: close and reopen the driver’s door once more. C. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in place. D. Close the driver’s door completely. E. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then turn it back to OFF. F. Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 5: Confirm Entry into Programming Mode Within 3 seconds of removing the key: The door locks should automatically lock and then unlock once. This indicates the vehicle has entered programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, return to Step 1 and begin the procedure again. Remote Fob Programming
- Step 6: Program Each Remote – Complete Within 40 Seconds Per Remote A. Simultaneously press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote for 1.5 seconds. B. Immediately release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. C. Watch for the door locks to lock and then unlock once. This confirms the remote has been successfully programmed. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat Step 6 for that remote.
- Step 7: Register Additional Remotes (if necessary) Repeat Step 6 for each remote you wish to program. Up to four remotes can typically be stored by the system during a single session.
- Step 8: Exit Programming Mode Open the driver’s door to exit programming mode. The vehicle will return to its normal operating state. Final Verification
- Step 9: Test Remote Functionality Step outside the vehicle and test each remote: Lock and unlock all doors. Check additional functions, such as panic or tailgate release (if applicable).
