Programming a Remote Head Key for 2012 Lincoln MKZ
Important: This guide explains spare remote head key using the vehicle’s ignition system. You must have two previously programmed keys to complete this process. Manual programming will not work with only one key. Carefully follow each step with the correct timing. Do not attempt to start the engine during the procedure. If any step is performed incorrectly, wait at least 10 seconds before restarting the process. Review the full instructions before beginning.
Remote Head Key Programming Steps:
- Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is turned off and all doors are fully closed.
- Step 2: Insert the first programmed key into the ignition cylinder.
- Step 3: Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (do not start the vehicle).
- Step 4: Keep the ignition ON for at least 3 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds.
- Step 5: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the first key.
- Step 6: Wait 3 to 10 seconds before continuing.
- Step 7: Insert the second programmed key into the ignition.
- Step 8: Turn the ignition from OFF to ON.
- Step 9: Keep the ignition ON for at least 3 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds.
- Step 10: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the second key.
- Step 11: Wait 3 to 10 seconds before proceeding.
- Step 12: Insert the new, unprogrammed key into the ignition.
- Step 13: Turn the ignition from OFF to ON.
- Step 14: Keep the ignition ON for at least 6 seconds to allow the system to recognize and program the new key.
- Step 15: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the newly programmed key.
- Step 16: Test the new key by starting the vehicle to ensure it was successfully programmed.
- Step 17: If the key includes built-in remote entry features, press the lock and unlock buttons to confirm remote functionality.
