Programming Instructions for 2012 Mazda CX-7

Flip Key Remote • Transponder Key • Smart Key

Section 1: Programming the Remote (Lock/Unlock) Portion of the Flip Key This procedure programs the remote functions of the flip key, such as locking and unlocking the doors. Follow each step precisely, as timing is important.

  • Step 1: Open the driver’s door and leave it open throughout the process.
  • Step 2: Use the power lock switch on the door to lock and then unlock the driver’s door.
  • Step 3: Insert the flip key into the ignition.
  • Step 4: Turn the key from the OFF to ON position and back to OFF three times within 10 seconds. After the third cycle, leave the key in the OFF position.
  • Step 5: Close and open the driver’s door three times. Leave the door open after the final cycle.
  • Step 6: The vehicle’s system will respond by locking and unlocking the doors once, indicating that it has entered remote programming mode.
  • Step 7: Press any button on the first remote twice. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm the remote has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 8: Repeat Step 7 for up to two additional remotes, for a total of three.
  • Step 9: Remove the key from the ignition. The system will finalize the process with a sequence of approximately four lock/unlock cycles.

Section 2: Programming the Transponder (Ignition) Portion of the Flip Key This procedure is used to program the immobilizer chip inside the key. You must have two already-programmed keys to complete the process.

Note: The key blade must be properly cut before beginning. Review all steps beforehand, as timing is critical.

  • Step 1: Insert the first working transponder key and turn it to the ON position. Wait at least one second (until the red key icon in the instrument cluster turns off), then remove the key.
  • Step 2: Within five seconds, insert the second programmed key. Turn it to the ON position for at least one second but no longer than five seconds. Then remove it.
  • Step 3: Within ten seconds, insert the new key to be programmed and turn it to the ON position.

If successful: The red key icon will briefly illuminate and turn off within one second.

If unsuccessful: The red key icon will flash continuously. Remove the key, wait one minute, and try again.

Section 3: Programming a Smart Key (If Equipped) The smart key system on the 2012 Mazda CX-7 cannot be programmed manually. It requires specialized equipment and must be completed by a qualified technician.

Smart Key Programming Overview:

  • Confirm Key Compatibility: Make sure the new smart key is compatible with the 2012 Mazda CX-7 and is not currently registered to another vehicle.
  • Schedule Service: Contact a certified technician or automotive service center with access to factory-level diagnostic tools.
  • System Access: The technician will connect to the vehicle’s onboard system and use diagnostic software to register the smart key.
  • Final Testing: Once programming is complete, the technician will verify that all smart key functions—lock/unlock, proximity detection, and push-button start—operate correctly.
