2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

A. Remote Head Key System Important Note: This procedure only applies if you already have two functional remote head keys. If you have fewer than two, this process cannot be completed using onboard programming.

Ignition Key Programming Steps:

  • Step 1: Insert the first working key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position for approximately 5 seconds. Do not start the engine.
  • Step 2: Turn the key back to the “LOCK” position and remove it from the ignition.
  • Step 3: Within 30 seconds, insert the second working key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position. Wait approximately 10 seconds until the immobilizer indicator begins to blink.
  • Step 4: Once the light blinks, turn the second key to the “LOCK” position and remove it.
  • Step 5: Within 30 seconds of removing the second key, insert the new unprogrammed key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position. Do this before the immobilizer light stops blinking.
  • Step 6: If the new key is accepted, the immobilizer light will illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn off. If the light turns off during the process or no response occurs, the programming has failed.
  • Step 7: To add more keys, repeat Steps 1 through 6 for each additional key.

Remote Button Programming (For Remote Head Key Only): Requirements: You must have one fully functional remote to initiate the programming mode.

  • Step 1: Gather all remotes (both current and new) that you wish to program.
  • Step 2: Using the working remote, press and hold the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds.
  • Step 3: While still holding UNLOCK, press and hold the LOCK button as well.
  • Step 4: Release the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons in sequence, within 10 seconds. The vehicle will confirm entry into programming mode by locking and unlocking the doors. All remotes except the one used for this step will now be erased.
  • Step 5: Within 60 seconds, program additional remotes by doing the following for each: Press LOCK and UNLOCK at the same time and hold for 2 seconds. Release both buttons for 1 second. Press and release the UNLOCK button.
  • Step 6: If successful, the doors will lock and unlock again to confirm.
  • Step 7: Repeat Step 5 for each additional remote within 60 seconds.
  • Step 8: If no remotes are added within 60 seconds, the system will exit programming mode automatically.
  • Step 9: Test all remotes to confirm full operation.

B. Smart Key System Important Note: This procedure requires two functional Smart Keys to add a third. If you have fewer than two, onboard programming is not possible.

Smart Key Programming Steps:

  • Step 1: Open the driver’s door and keep it open throughout the process. Do not open or close any other doors.
  • Step 2: While carrying the first working Smart Key, turn the ignition to the “ON” position without starting the engine. Perform the next steps within 30 seconds.
  • Step 3: Insert the new unprogrammed Smart Key into the designated key slot in the correct direction.
  • Step 4: With the first Smart Key, press and hold the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds, then press and hold the LOCK button while still holding UNLOCK.
  • Step 5: Release the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons in sequence within 10 seconds of pressing the LOCK button.
  • Step 6: With the second Smart Key, repeat the same button sequence: press UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, press and hold LOCK, then release LOCK and UNLOCK in order.
  • Step 7: The immobilizer icon on the instrument panel will blink. When programming is successful, a chime will sound three times, and the immobilizer indicator will remain lit for about 30 seconds.
  • Step 8: If programming fails, a long tone will sound for 3 seconds, and the process will be canceled.
  • Step 9: To program additional Smart Keys, repeat the full procedure starting from Step 1 after turning off the ignition and removing the newly added Smart Key.
