2012 Scion xB Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Note: These instructions apply only to the remote (keyless entry) portion of the Remote Head Key. The mechanical key blade and immobilizer chip must be cut and programmed by a qualified automotive technician.
The system supports four programming modes:
Confirmation Mode – Displays the number of remotes currently registered.
Add Mode – Allows a new remote to be added without deleting existing ones.
Rewrite Mode – Erases all previously registered remotes and programs new ones.
Prohibition Mode – Clears all remotes and disables the wireless lock function.
Confirmation Mode – Check Number of Registered Remotes Start with the driver’s door open and unlocked. Keep the key out of the ignition.
- Step 1: Insert the key into the ignition, then remove it.
- Step 2: Within 5 seconds, repeat Step 1.
- Step 3: Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice, then insert and remove the key again.
- Step 4: Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice, insert the key, and close the driver’s door.
- Step 5: Turn the ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF three times, pausing one second at each position.
- Step 6: Remove the key. The doors will lock and unlock repeatedly.
The number of cycles indicates how many remotes are programmed. If the doors cycle five times, there are no remotes registered. Add Mode – Add a Remote Without Affecting Existing Ones Start with the key out of the ignition and the driver’s door open and unlocked.
- Step 1: Insert and remove the key.
- Step 2: Within 5 seconds, repeat Step 1.
- Step 3: Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice, then insert and remove the key again.
- Step 4: Within another 40 seconds, close and open the door twice, insert the key, and close the driver’s door.
- Step 5: Turn the ignition from LOCK to ON to OFF once, pausing one second at each position.
- Step 6: Remove the key. The doors will lock and unlock once, confirming Add Mode is active.
- Step 7: Within 40 seconds, press LOCK and UNLOCK on the remote simultaneously, then release.
- Step 8: Within 3 seconds, press any one button on the remote and release. One lock/unlock cycle means success. Two cycles mean the attempt failed.
- Step 9: Repeat Steps 7–8 to program additional remotes within 40 seconds.
- Step 10: Insert the key or open a door to exit programming mode.
Rewrite Mode – Erase All Remotes and Register New Ones Begin with the key out and the driver’s door open and unlocked.
- Step 1: Insert and remove the key.
- Step 2: Within 5 seconds, insert and remove the key again.
- Step 3: Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice, then insert and remove the key again.
- Step 4: Within the next 40 seconds, close and open the door twice, insert the key, and close the driver’s door.
- Step 5: Turn the ignition from LOCK to ON to OFF two times, pausing one second in each position.
- Step 6: Remove the key. The doors will lock and unlock twice, indicating Rewrite Mode is active.
- Step 7: Within 40 seconds, press LOCK and UNLOCK on the remote simultaneously, then release.
- Step 8: Within 3 seconds, press any one button and release. Doors lock/unlock once = success. Doors lock/unlock twice = failure.
- Step 9: Repeat Steps 7–8 for each remote to be registered within 40 seconds.
- Step 10: Insert the key or open a door to complete programming.
Prohibition Mode – Erase All Remotes and Disable Remote Locking Start with the driver’s door open and unlocked. Keep the key out of the ignition.
- Step 1: Insert and remove the key.
- Step 2: Within 5 seconds, repeat Step 1.
- Step 3: Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver’s door twice, then insert and remove the key again.
- Step 4: Within the next 40 seconds, close and open the door twice, insert the key into the ignition, and close the driver’s door.
- Step 5: Turn the ignition from LOCK to ON to OFF five times, pausing one second each time.
- Step 6: Remove the key. The doors will lock and unlock five times, confirming all remotes have been erased and the remote locking function has been disabled.
