2012 Scion xD Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Note: These instructions apply to programming the remote (keyless entry) portion of the Remote Head Key. If your key contains a transponder chip, the key blade must be cut and programmed by a professional technician. If the key is a non-transponder type, it only needs to be cut—no electronic programming is required for ignition use.

Step-by-Step Remote Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Make sure the key is removed from the ignition.
  • Step 2: Manually open and unlock the driver’s door. Keep all other doors, including the trunk, fully closed.
  • Step 3: Within 5 seconds, insert the key into the ignition and remove it twice in quick succession.
  • Step 4: Close and then open the driver’s door two times.
  • Step 5: Insert the key into the ignition and remove it again.
  • Step 6: Close and open the driver’s door two more times.
  • Step 7: Insert the key into the ignition and leave it inserted.
  • Step 8: Close the driver’s door.
  • Step 9: Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then switch it back to OFF.
  • Step 10: Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 11: The door locks will automatically cycle (lock and unlock) to indicate that the vehicle is now in programming mode.
  • Step 12: On the first remote, press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 1.5 seconds, then release.
  • Step 13: Immediately press and hold the LOCK button for 2 seconds, then release. The door locks will cycle once to confirm successful programming. If the doors cycle twice, the attempt was unsuccessful. Repeat Steps 12–13.
  • Step 14: If you have additional remotes to program, repeat Steps 12 and 13 within the same session.
  • Step 15: Open the driver’s door to exit programming mode. The process is now complete.
