2012 Subaru Outback Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Overview: The 2012 Subaru Outback is equipped with a keyless entry system that supports programming of up to four unique remote transmitters. Each remote has an 8-digit identification code that must be manually entered into the system to complete registration. You can also use this process to erase old or lost remotes by overwriting existing codes. The 8-digit code is printed either inside the remote on the circuit board or on a label from the original packaging. Be sure to locate and write down this number before starting. Before You Begin Read all steps before starting; the process is time-sensitive and must be followed precisely. Ensure the area is free of other vehicles with remotes in range to prevent signal interference.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Sit in the driver's seat. Confirm that all doors, the trunk, and rear hatch are closed.
- Step 2: Open and close the driver's door once.
- Step 3: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver's door again.
- Step 4: Turn the ignition key from LOCK to ON (do not start the engine), then back to LOCK — repeat this 10 times within 15 seconds. When done correctly, you’ll hear a single confirmation tone, followed by a continuous buzzer, and the interior lights will flash. If none of these indicators appear, return to Step 3 and try again.
- Step 5: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver's door one more time. A 30-second tone will begin, signaling the vehicle is ready for code entry. Entering the Transmitter Code
- Step 6: Using the driver's side power lock switch, enter your 8-digit remote code: Press the LOCK button the number of times that corresponds to the first digit. Press UNLOCK once to move to the next digit. Repeat this process for all 8 digits. After the last digit, press UNLOCK once again to confirm the first entry.
- Step 7: Immediately repeat the 8-digit code using the same method. After entering the final digit a second time, press UNLOCK one last time. A confirmation tone will sound for 30 seconds if the codes match and are accepted. If the tone does not play or if you exceed five seconds between inputs, the system will exit programming mode. Restart from Step 4. Adding Additional Remotes
- Step 8: To program another remote, repeat Steps 4 through 7 for each. A maximum of four remotes can be stored. Finalizing Programming
- Step 9: Once all remotes are programmed, remove the key from the ignition. The system will automatically exit programming mode.
- Step 10: Test each remote to verify it locks and unlocks the doors correctly. Erasing Previously Stored Remotes To delete any old or lost remotes from the system, you can overwrite the memory with remotes you currently own: If you have one working remote, program it four times. If you have two, program each one twice. If you have three, program two once and the third twice. This will clear all previously saved remote codes from memory. Important: Ensure no other remotes are active or being used nearby during programming. Any signal detected during this time could be mistakenly programmed into your vehicle.
