2013 Mitsubishi Outlander – Key Fob & Smart Key Programming Instructions

Standard Key / Remote Head Key – Immobilizer Programming (Start Function Only) This procedure applies to vehicles with standard ignition or remote head keys (excluding Canadian models). You must have two functional programmed keys to add a third. This process only programs the key to start the vehicle, not the remote functions.

  • Step 1: Insert the first programmed key into the ignition. Turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine) and wait 5 seconds.
  • Step 2: Turn the key to the LOCK position and remove it.
  • Step 3: Within 30 seconds, insert the second programmed key, turn it to the ON position, and wait approximately 10 seconds until the immobilizer indicator begins flashing.
  • Step 4: Turn the second key to LOCK and remove it once the light starts flashing.

  • Step 6: Confirm the new key starts the vehicle.
  • Step 7: Repeat the process to add additional keys. Remote Head Key – Remote Button Programming This procedure allows you to register the lock and unlock buttons of Remote Head Keys.

At least one working remote is required to initiate the process.

  • Step 1: Prepare all remotes (old and new). Only remotes registered during this session will continue to function.
  • Step 2: With a working remote, press and hold the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds, then press and hold the LOCK button.
  • Step 3: Within 10 seconds, release LOCK, then UNLOCK. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm programming mode has been activated.
  • Step 4: Within 60 seconds, register each additional remote: Press and hold both LOCK and UNLOCK for 2 seconds Release both for 1 second Press and release UNLOCK
  • Step 5: The doors will cycle to confirm each successful registration.
  • Step 6: If no remotes are programmed within 60 seconds, the system will exit programming mode.

You will need two programmed smart keys and one properly cut emergency key. Not valid for Canadian models.

Part 1: Smart Key Immobilizer (Start Function) Programming

  • Step 1: Remove the emergency key from the new smart key.
  • Step 2: Press the lock release tabs and remove the ignition switch cover.
  • Step 3: Insert the emergency key into the ignition switch.
  • Step 4: Attach the first programmed smart key to the emergency key and turn it to the ON position for 5 seconds, then back to LOCK.
  • Step 5: Within 30 seconds, remove the first smart key, attach the second smart key, and turn it to the ON position. Wait about 10 seconds until the immobilizer light begins flashing.
  • Step 6: Turn the second key to LOCK and remove it.
  • Step 7: Within 30 seconds, attach the new smart key, insert it into the emergency key, and turn to ON. If successful, the immobilizer light will turn on solid for 3 seconds, then off. If the light does not behave as described, restart from Step 1.
  • Step 8: Repeat for any additional smart keys.

Part 2: Smart Key Button Programming (Remote Lock/Unlock)

  • Step 1: Remove the emergency key and ignition cover.
  • Step 2: Insert the emergency key into the ignition, attach the first smart key, and turn to the ON position.
  • Step 3: Within 30 seconds, remove the smart key.
  • Step 4: On the first smart key, press and hold UNLOCK and LOCK together for 4 to 10 seconds.
  • Step 5: Within 10 seconds, release LOCK, then UNLOCK.
  • Step 6: On the second smart key, press and hold UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, then press and hold LOCK.
  • Step 7: Within 10 seconds, release LOCK, then UNLOCK. The immobilizer light on the dashboard will begin to flash.
  • Step 8: Within 60 seconds, take the new smart key and press the LOCK button twice. The immobilizer light will illuminate solid for 30 seconds, indicating successful programming.
  • Step 9: Test the new smart key for both engine start and remote button functions.
