2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport – Keyless Entry Remote Fob & Smart Key Programming Instructions

A. Remote Head Key System Important Notice: This procedure applies only if you have two already-programmed remote head keys. If fewer than two are available, onboard programming is not possible.

Programming the Ignition Key Portion:

  • Step 1: Insert the first working key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position (without starting the engine) for approximately 5 seconds.
  • Step 2: Turn the key back to the “LOCK” position and remove it.
  • Step 3: Within 30 seconds of removing the first key, insert the second working key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position.
  • Step 4: Wait about 10 seconds. The immobilizer indicator on the dashboard should begin blinking.
  • Step 5: When the blinking begins, turn the second key to the “LOCK” position and remove it.
  • Step 6: Within 30 seconds, insert the new unprogrammed key and turn it to the “ON” position. This must be done while the immobilizer light is still blinking.
  • Step 7: If programming is successful, the immobilizer light will remain on for about 3 seconds, then turn off. If the light turns off earlier or no response is seen, the process was not successful.
  • Step 8: To program additional keys, repeat Steps 1 through 7 for each new key.

Programming the Remote Functions (For Remote Head Key): Requirements: You must have at least one working remote to enter programming mode.

  • Step 1: Gather all remotes (new and existing) that you want to program. Keep them nearby.
  • Step 2: Using the working remote, press and hold the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds.
  • Step 3: While still holding UNLOCK, press and hold the LOCK button as well.
  • Step 4: Release both LOCK and UNLOCK buttons in sequence within 10 seconds. The door locks will cycle (lock and unlock) to confirm entry into programming mode. At this point, all previously programmed remotes—except the one just used—are erased.
  • Step 5: Within 60 seconds, program the remaining remotes one at a time by following this process: Press and hold both LOCK and UNLOCK buttons for 2 seconds Release both buttons for 1 second Press and release the UNLOCK button
  • Step 6: If successful, the door locks will cycle to confirm each new remote has been accepted.
  • Step 7: Repeat Step 5 for each additional remote within the 60-second window.
  • Step 8: If no remotes are programmed within 60 seconds, the system will exit programming mode.
  • Step 9: Test each remote to verify full functionality.

B. Smart Key System Important Notice: To use the onboard programming process, you must have two functioning Smart Keys. If you do not, this procedure cannot be completed using vehicle-based programming.

Smart Key Programming Steps:

  • Step 1: Open the driver’s door and leave it open throughout the process. Do not open or close any other doors during programming.
  • Step 2: Carry the first programmed Smart Key and turn the ignition to the “ON” position without starting the engine. Perform the following steps within 30 seconds.
  • Step 3: Insert the new Smart Key into the key slot in the correct orientation as shown in your owner’s manual.
  • Step 4: With the first programmed Smart Key, press and hold the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds, then press and hold the LOCK button while still holding UNLOCK.
  • Step 5: Release the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons in sequence within 10 seconds of pressing the LOCK button.
  • Step 6: With the second programmed Smart Key, repeat the same button sequence: press and hold UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, then press and hold LOCK, and finally release both buttons in sequence within 10 seconds.
  • Step 7: The immobilizer light on the multi-information display will blink. If programming is successful, a chime will sound three times, and the immobilizer indicator will remain lit for 30 seconds.
  • Step 8: If the procedure fails, a warning tone will sound for 3 seconds, and programming will be canceled.
  • Step 9: To program another Smart Key, repeat the process starting from Step 1 after turning off the ignition and removing the newly added Smart Key from the slot.
